Born in Dallas, Texas, and raised in Rowlett, Texas, he currently resides in Rockwall, Texas. His parents, René and Betsy Castro, are Colombian, and he is the first person in his family to be born in the United States, followed by younger siblings Michael Castro and Jackeline (Jackie Castro), both of whom are singer-songwriters as well. Spanish was his first language as a child. Their father, René, is an architectural swimming pool designer and singer-songwriter.
He attended Vernon Schrade Middle School as a child and went on to Rowlett High School where he was a left winger on his school's soccer team and an honor student. He received a 1340 out of 1600 on his SAT. Castro was a junior majoring in Construction Science at Texas A&M University in College Station on a full academic scholarship when he auditioned for American Idol.
Castro has sported dreadlocks for more than three years.
Castro grew up playing drums. He taught himself to play the guitar in college. He had no formal voice training before auditioning for American Idol and had previously sung only 5 times in public, mostly during church services.
Castro performed as a drummer with the rock band Charlemagne, which later became Keeping Lions. He has stated that his musical influences include Ray LaMontagne, Ben Harper, Bob Marley, Carlos Vives and Kirk Baxley.
Castro was the love interest of Cheyenne Kimball on her MTV reality show, Cheyenne and was also featured in her music video for "Hanging On".
On October 31 on Halloween in 2009, Castro proposed to Mandy Mayhall, an alumna of the University of Oklahoma, a sister of Kappa Kappa Gamma and his girlfriend of a year and a half. Castro proposed to her at a tailgate party before the Oklahoma/Kansas State football game in Norman, Oklahoma. The two were dressed as Disney characters Belle and The Beast from the animated film Beauty and the Beast as their Halloween costumes. Castro and Mayhall began dating in 2008 when Castro's Idol stint began but first became friends in high school at Rowlett High School. Mayhall made a brief cameo in Castro's music video for "Let's Just Fall In Love Again".
As of January 2, 2010 Castro and Mayhall were married in his hometown near Dallas, TX. Castro and Mayhall now reside together in Dallas.
You Can Always Come Home

I'm gonna come right out and say it
Even though I hardly know you at all
That's what makes this so hard
Cause I remember he hurt you
Told you he didn't have the time
To see you or even answer your calls
After breaking your heart
I know we barely even started
But I fully believe you could have been the one for me
And I miss what we might have had
Honey I miss what we could have done
I wrote a sad song about it and I'm still pretty bitter
But I'm happy if your happy, he won
I still miss you in the night
And I want you to know
If he leaves you cold in the city, aching for a lover
Honey, you can always come home.
Yeah
Oh, do you ever stop to think
That he did it to you once
So he's probably gonna do it again
Oh do you defend
That he's an angel of virtue
He made a mistake and it cost him what he loved
But he knows what he's done
He's sorry for it now
Oh, he's never gonna leave you again
Well maybe your right, but I still believe
That you could have be the one for me
And I miss what we might have had
Honey, I miss what we could have done
I wrote a sad song about it and I'm still pretty bitter
But I'm happy if your happy, he won
I still miss you in the night
And I want you to know
If he leaves you cold in the city
Aching for a lover
Honey you can always come home
If he leaves you cold in the city
And you're begging for a lover
Honey, you can always come home
In Jason Castro's song "You Can Always Come Home," the singer expresses his feelings towards a girl he believes is in a relationship with the wrong guy. The opening lyrics, "I don't think he deserves you. I'm gonna come right out and say it," makes the song unique in its direct confrontation of a relationship. Castro honestly admits that he hardly knows the girl, which explains the "hard" aspect of the situation. Still, he can't ignore the fact that the girl's current partner, the guy who hurt her, is not the right person for her. Despite barely starting a relationship, Castro reflects on what could have been and writes a sad song about it.
The rest of the song is about how Castro still misses the girl and wants her to know that no matter what, she can always come back to him. He questions the girl's defense of her current boyfriend, believing that if the guy hurt her once, he'll do it again. Castro admits that he's still bitter about the missed chance but says he's happy if she's happy, even if it's not with him. In the closing lines, he reminds the girl that if she ever needs someone, she can always come home to him.
