Rest
Jason Gray (Holiday) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I found them standing in my door
In the clumsy silence of the poor
I've got no time for precious things
But at least they won't be wandering
If they're sleeping on my stable floor

There were no rooms to rent tonight
The only empty bed is mine
ā€˜Cause I'm overbooked and overrun
With so many things that must be done
Until I'm numb and running blind

I need rest, I need rest
Lost inside a forest of a million trees
Trying to find my way back to me
I need rest

As a boy I heard the old men sing
About a Kingdom and a coming King
But keeping books and changing beds
Put a different song inside my head
And the melody is deafening

I need rest, Oh I need rest
Like a drowning man in the open sea
I need somebody to rescue me
I need rest

To Rome we're only names and numbers
Not souls in search of signs and wonders
But we're waiting for the day of our salvation
The Messiah who will be our liberation
We're waiting, I'm waiting

I need rest, I need rest
Oh come oh come Emmanuel
With a sword deliver Israel
I need rest

Tonight I can't get any sleep
With those shepherds shouting in the streets
A star is shining much too bright

Somewhere I hear a baby cry
And all I want is a little peace

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jason Gray's (Holiday) song Rest tell a story of a man who is tired and overwhelmed from the busyness and demands of his life. He paints a picture of poverty, with people standing in his doorway, seeking refuge for the night. Despite having no time for "precious things," the man allows them to sleep on his stable floor, highlighting his own kindness and compassion.

The song goes on to describe how the man is so busy that he doesn't even have an empty bed to offer his unexpected guests, as he himself is overbooked and overrun with tasks. He feels lost and disconnected from himself, searching for rest and longing for something more in life. The chorus repeats his plea for rest, emphasizing the desperate need for a break from the chaos.

He then reflects on his childhood and recalls the old songs he heard about a coming King and a kingdom. However, the demands of life have drowned out that hopeful melody, and he feels overwhelmed and deafened by the noise of his current reality. He longs for a rescuer, someone to deliver him from his current state of exhaustion.

The song takes a religious turn towards the end, describing how people are often reduced to numbers and names in society, but they are all waiting for a Messiah who will bring liberation and salvation. The man, like many others, is waiting for that day and hoping for rest in the meantime.

Overall, Rest is a powerful and moving song that captures the struggles and longings of the human experience. It speaks to the need for compassion, hope, and rest in a world that can often be overwhelming and exhausting.

Wonderful song. One of my favorites parts is the very last lines where he says he cannot sleep because of those shepherds shouting in the street, the bright star, and he hears a baby crying somewhere. I just love that you have included the innkeeper in your list of characters.

@myrrhfortheroad

Awesome song! So packed full of meaning. I also really like the line, "Lost in a forest of a million trees" echoing the fact that the Innkeeper just couldn't see the trees (the Shepherds, the Star, the Christ and his Family) for the forest (The long awaited coming of the Messiah he truly needed). Just amazing!

@meanoldbat
