Something More Than Free
Jason Isbell Lyrics

When I get home from work
I'll call up all my friends
And we'll go bust up something beautiful
We'll have to build again

When I get home from work
I'll wrestle off my clothes
And leave 'em right inside the front door
Nobody's home to know

You see the hammer finds the nail
And a freight train needs the rails
I guess I'm doin' what I'm on this earth to do

I don't think on why I'm here or where it hurts
I'm just lucky to have the work
Sunday morning I'm too tired to go to church
But I thank God for the work
I thank God for the work

When I get my reward my work will all be done
And I will sit back in my chair beside the father and the son
No more holes to fill and no more rocks to break
And no more loading boxes on the trucks for someone else's sake

You see the hammer needs the nail
And the poor man's up for sale
I guess I'm doin' what I'm on this earth to do

I don't think on why I'm here or where it hurts
I'm just lucky to have the work
Every night I dream I'm drowning in the dirt
But I thank God for the work

And the day will come, I'll find a reason
Somebody proud to love a man like me
My back is numb, my hands are freezing
What I'm working for is something more than free

I don't think on why I'm here or where it hurts
I'm just lucky to have the work
Sunday morning I'm too tired to go to church

But I thank God for the work
I thank God for the work

Overall Meaning

The first verse describes the singer's desire to create something beautiful only to destroy it later with his friends. He admits the need for destruction to rebuild and create something new. The second verse is more personal, describing the singer's routine after a long day at work. He strips off his clothes and leaves them at the door, happy that no one is around to judge him. The following verses contrast the singer's work with leisure time: enjoying the work while exhausted on Sundays and dreaming of drowning in dirt every night. The singer explains that he isn't sure why he's here or where it hurts, but he feels grateful for his job. He finishes with determination, hoping to find someone to love and valuing that his work is worth the effort, a sentiment that's more than mere compensation.

Is it just me or does Isbell manage to capture sincerity in both the gratefulness of having work and the sadness that people are forced into lives of work? Truly brilliant.

I think both of you are missing the first four the trees. Look at Jason's NPR tiny desk set when he talks about this song & how it's about how ppl work shit jobs for rewards after death when they should do what they love now instead of waiting. This is an anti work song. Give it a listen w that in mind
