Traveling Alone
Jason Isbell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mountains rough this time of year
Close the highway down
They don't warn the town

And I've been fighting second gear
For fifteen miles or so
Trying to beat the angry snow
And I know every town worth passing through
But what good does knowing do
With no one to show it to

And I've grown tired of traveling alone
Tired of traveling alone
I've grown tired of traveling alone
Won't you ride with me?

I've grown tired of traveling alone
Tired of traveling alone
I've grown tired of traveling alone
Won't you ride with me?

Won't you ride?
Won't you ride?

I quit talking to myself
Listening to the radio
Long, long time ago
Damn near strangled by my appetite
Ybor City on a Friday night
Couldn't even stand up right

So high the street girls wouldn't take my pay
They said come see me on a better day
She just danced away

And I've grown tired of traveling alone
Tired of traveling alone
I've grown tired of traveling alone
Won't you ride with me?

I've grown tired of traveling alone
Tired of traveling alone
I've grown tired of traveling alone
Won't you ride with me?

Won't you ride?
Won't you ride?
Painting the outside lane
I'm tired of answering to myself
Heart like a rebuilt part
I don't know how much it's got left
How much it's got left

I've grown tired of traveling alone
Tired of traveling alone
I've grown tired of traveling alone
Won't you ride with me?

I've grown tired of traveling alone
Tired of traveling alone
I've grown tired of traveling alone
Won't you ride with me?

Won't you ride?
Won't you ride?

Overall Meaning

In Jason Isbell's song Traveling Alone, the artist speaks about the struggles of being on the road and traveling constantly, with no one to share the experience with. The lyrics express the frustration of trying to navigate through difficult terrain, "mountains rough this time of year," and facing the challenges of winter weather, with no help or support. Isbell sings about how he knows every town worth passing through, but it doesn't mean much without someone to show it to. This highlights the isolation, loneliness, and monotony that comes with traveling alone.

Isbell mentions Ybor City, which is a historic district in Tampa, Florida, that is known for its vibrant nightlife, cigars, and antiques. He talks about getting drunk on a Friday night and trying to navigate his appetite and physical state. He also mentions street girls, who refused to take his money, which could be interpreted as a metaphor for feeling disconnected from humanity, as he travels through life.

The song's chorus, "I've grown tired of traveling alone, won't you ride with me?" conveys an obvious desire and hope for companionship. The artist is asking for someone to ride with him, to help carry the load of the journey they are embarking on, and to share the beauty of the world around them.

I went through a major depression and as I was clawing my way out of the depths of that hell I can remember many many nights setting in the dark, in a tractor, in my truck, screaming this song at the top of my lungs crying, so so very tired of traveling alone. It still makes me tear up when I hear it today because in some weird way it was my anthem cry to God. Today I am living and no longer traveling alone, God bless

I discovered this song a year or so out from the loss of my beloved wife of 34 years. I was also so very "tired of traveling alone". That said, I wasn't ready to "move on". Now, 5+ years out, I can't imagine that I ever will be ready. Is what it is. See you on the other side, sweet baby...

@CCCW057

Condolences to you Brother.
