He developed a method of tuning his guitar that complemented his voice and worked with his background as a bass player. Finding his niche in indie rock circles, Molina made home recordings under the names 'Songs: Albian', 'Songs: Radix', and 'Songs: Unitas' to pass out at live shows. Settling on 'Songs: Ohia', Molina released a single on Palace Records in 1996. The first 'Songs: Ohia' full-length followed in 1997; released on the Secretly Canadian label.
By 2001, Molina had given his tenor guitar a rest in favor of a regular six-string instrument and had put together a full band to back him. However, 2002's Didn't it Rain saw Molina working with members of neo-bluegrass outfit Jim & Jennie & the Pinetops, achieving an almost gospel sound that was a vast departure from the dense feel of Ghost Tropic. Constantly recording and writing new songs, Songs: Ohia released a handful of singles and EPs in 2002, including a split EP with Louisville's My Morning Jacket and a collaborative EP (under the name Amalgamated Sons of Rest) with Will Oldham and Alasdair Roberts. Pyramid Electric Co. and Magnolia Electric Co., originally conceived as a double album, were released separately in early 2003. The former, a sparse solo album, was recorded with Mike Mogis (from Lullaby for the Working Class) while the latter featured a full band and was recorded by Steve Albini.
Jason Molina died, at age 39, on 18. March 2013 from complications of alcoholism.

Hold up the pain
Hold up the pain
Shadows signal to the rest of the dark
Hold up all the pain
I want to see where this all starts
Show me any two eyes that don't believe in the dark
Night wind and the cross road and the blue ghost's name
All start with danger
The letter danger
Look in my eyes and see if it's still true
It all used to
With all that blue that you carry around in your heart
It must be raining there forever
With all that blue that you carried around in your heart
It must have been true
The lyrics to Jason Molina's song "It Must Be Raining There Forever" are about pain and suffering. The first verse speaks of shadows signaling to the rest of the dark, which can be interpreted as the darkness within ourselves that we try to keep hidden from others. The repetition of "Hold up the pain" emphasizes the burden of this darkness that we carry. Molina asks to see any two eyes that don't believe in the dark, highlighting the universality of pain and suffering. He challenges those who try to hide it to hold back the stars, showing the impossibility of suppressing one's inner pain.
In the second verse, Molina mentions a night wind and a crossroad, both symbols of danger. The repetition of the word "danger" creates tension and reinforces the idea that the pain and suffering one carries can be dangerous. He invites the listener to look in his eyes and see if it's still true that everything used to be blue. The color blue is often associated with sadness and melancholy, and Molina suggests that it's something he and the listener have in common. The repeated line "It must be raining there forever" creates a sense of hopelessness and despair.
Overall, the lyrics paint a picture of someone struggling with pain and trying to come to terms with it. Despite the darkness, there is a sense of unity in the shared experience of pain.
