A Beautiful Mess
Jason Mraz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(One, two, three)

You've got the best of both worlds
You're the kind of girl who can take down a man
And lift him back up again
You are strong but you're needy
Humble but you're greedy
And based on your body language
And shoddy cursive I've been reading
You're style is quite selective
Though your mind is rather reckless
Well I guess it just suggests that this is just what happiness is

And what a beautiful mess this is
It's like we're picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you write
Kind of turn themselves into knives
And don't mind my nerve you could call it fiction
But I like being submerged in your contradictions, dear
'Cause here we are, here we are

Although you were biased I love your advice
Your comebacks they're quick And probably have to do with your insecurities
There's no shame in being crazy
Depending on how you take these
Words I'm paraphrasing this relationship we're staging

And it's a beautiful mess, this is
It's like, picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you say
Kind of turn themselves into blades
Kind and courteous is a life I've heard
But it's nice to say that we played in the dirt
Oh dear
'Cause here we are, here we are

Here we are
Here we are
Here we are
Here we are

Here we are
Here we are
Here we are
We're still here

What a beautiful mess this is
It's like taking a guess when the only answer is yes

And through timeless words and priceless pictures
We'll fly like birds not of this earth
And tides they turn and hearts disfigure
But that's no concern when we're wounded together

And we tore our dresses and stained our shirts
But it's nice today, oh, the wait was so worth it

Overall Meaning

Jason Mraz’s “A Beautiful Mess” is a song that describes the complexity and beauty of a relationship with a woman who is a mix of strength and vulnerability. The opening lines “You’ve got the best of both worlds. You're the kind of girl who can take down a man and lift him back up again” suggests that the woman is strong and independent, but still has a need for love and companionship. The lyrics also indicate that the woman has a selective taste in style, yet her mind is reckless, revealing her inner conflicts.

Mraz’s words demonstrate a remarkable talent for observing the wonderful chaos that comes with life, as seen in the lines, “It’s like we’re picking up trash in dresses” and “It’s like taking a guess when the only answer is yes.” The song goes on to describe the pain and hurt that can come with a relationship, such as the way words can turn into knives that cut deep, but also shows the beauty in the imperfections and willingness to take risks in love. The final lines of the song paint a picture of the couple overcoming the obstacles together, and that through all the struggles and messiness, the wait was worth it.

Overall, “A Beautiful Mess” is an honest portrayal of the ups and downs of a relationship, with lyrics that beautifully capture the complexities of human emotions.

I discovered this song when I was 15. Thought I find the love of my life at 21, and dedicated this song to her. And now that I'm single again, after struggle with mental problems and depression, I give a meaning to that last line Jason sings: "Oh the wait was so worth it", hey, lots of things had to happen until you find you have yourself forever, you are here, alive, you don't need nobody, just your mental health and the calm this songs bring to you. Thanks Mr. A-z

I also found this song when I was 15 thru endless scrolling here on YouTube. I thought it was so beautiful before. Now that I'm 23, I cried when I heard this version. I was wrong at 15. This song was never beautiful - it was BEYOND beautiful. I understand the lyrics now, it pierced inch by inch through my skin. And it was as beautiful as the first time I heard it, 8 years ago.

Jason....do you have any idea how BEAUTIFUL your voice is? My sons and I have come to see you countless times and each show is more BEAUTIFUL than the last. Thank you for sharing your songwriting and vocals with the world! We are blessed to hear it.

This makes me cry every time I hear it. I know that a man isn’t supposed to be sensitive like that but the meaning behind the lyrics is something else. The first time I heard this song was 4 years ago when I was a freshman in high school. This is the only song that can make me cry. I know that this song is supposed to be about love but I’ve never fallen in love with anyone yet. I just graduated high school on May 24th 2022 and listening to this song once again still has the same feeling from the first time I heard it. When I get married I want this song to play at my wedding during the slow dance part.

learn to waltz because that's the song structure. you will be beautiful!

@janeEriley

Males can absolutely be sensitive; it's the healthiest way♡
