A Beautiful Mess
Jason Mraz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(One, two, three)

You've got the best of both worlds
You're the kind of girl who can take down a man
And lift him back up again
You are strong but you're needy
Humble but you're greedy
And based on your body language
And shoddy cursive I've been reading
You're style is quite selective
Though your mind is rather reckless
Well I guess it just suggests that this is just what happiness is

And what a beautiful mess this is
It's like we're picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you write
Kind of turn themselves into knives
And don't mind my nerve you could call it fiction
But I like being submerged in your contradictions, dear
'Cause here we are, here we are

Although you were biased I love your advice
Your comebacks they're quick And probably have to do with your insecurities
There's no shame in being crazy
Depending on how you take these
Words I'm paraphrasing this relationship we're staging

And it's a beautiful mess, this is
It's like, picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you say
Kind of turn themselves into blades
Kind and courteous is a life I've heard
But it's nice to say that we played in the dirt
Oh dear
'Cause here we are, here we are

Here we are
Here we are
Here we are
Here we are

Here we are
Here we are
Here we are
We're still here

What a beautiful mess this is
It's like taking a guess when the only answer is yes

And through timeless words and priceless pictures
We'll fly like birds not of this earth
And tides they turn and hearts disfigure
But that's no concern when we're wounded together

And we tore our dresses and stained our shirts
But it's nice today, oh, the wait was so worth it

Overall Meaning

Jason Mraz’s “A Beautiful Mess” is a song that describes the complexity and beauty of a relationship with a woman who is a mix of strength and vulnerability. The opening lines “You’ve got the best of both worlds. You're the kind of girl who can take down a man and lift him back up again” suggests that the woman is strong and independent, but still has a need for love and companionship. The lyrics also indicate that the woman has a selective taste in style, yet her mind is reckless, revealing her inner conflicts.

Mraz’s words demonstrate a remarkable talent for observing the wonderful chaos that comes with life, as seen in the lines, “It’s like we’re picking up trash in dresses” and “It’s like taking a guess when the only answer is yes.” The song goes on to describe the pain and hurt that can come with a relationship, such as the way words can turn into knives that cut deep, but also shows the beauty in the imperfections and willingness to take risks in love. The final lines of the song paint a picture of the couple overcoming the obstacles together, and that through all the struggles and messiness, the wait was worth it.

Overall, “A Beautiful Mess” is an honest portrayal of the ups and downs of a relationship, with lyrics that beautifully capture the complexities of human emotions.

I'm doing well. Thank you! Though I can't say "Oh, the wait was so worth it" about my now ex-wife, I can say it about my current wife. The wait and the pain was worth it. She is a beautiful soul and a lovely person. She went through a very similar experience with her marriage. And now we are both blessed and happy to have each other. And what's more, we're both on good terms with our exes! It's amazing how things can work out when you have faith and endure. Happy Holidays to you!

To Dominic Wong:
It's always possible, of course, that I may hit a glass bottom and have an ongoing painful learning journey, ongoing painful learning journey, but "Here we are" and ". . . it's nice today". I truly believe that if my wife and I both remember our past experiences, the good and the bad, and go forward being honest and open with each other, having patience and long-suffering one to the other, and having faith in the higher being we both believe in, then we will experience together the wondrous experience expressed by Gustav Mahler in his masterful work Symphony #2 "Resurrection":

"O Pain, You piercer of all things,
From you, I have been wrested!
O Death, You conqueror of all things,
Now, are you conquered!

With wings which I have won for myself,
In love's fierce striving,
I shall soar upwards
To the light which no eye has penetrated!

Die shall I in order to LIVE.

Rise again, yes, rise again,
Will you, my heart, in an instant!
That for which you suffered,
To God shall it carry you!"

To listen to and watch an absolutely supernal performance of Mahler's work, as performed by the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, with Gustavo Dudamel conducting, go here: https://youtu.be/AbovYqWT-LM

If you don't have the patience or the interest to watch the whole hour+ performance, you should at least listen to about the last ten minutes. Glorious!]

As a girl with ADHD and Anxiety Disorder, I think everyone should fall for someone who can love you for all that you are even when you're messy and contradictory. Even if you don't have any mental disorders, life is messy and people are messy. Love isn't about two perfect people, it's about two imperfect people humbling themselves and working together to make a relationship work in this chaotic life.

im a huge fan of music and whenever I find a beautiful song I share it with friends but this has always been the only song I've ever loved that I've never shared with anyone. its so precious and close to my heart that the very thought of someone not liking it would break me. so I just live life, greedily listening to something so perfect wishing that everyone could just stumble upon it and praying to god that they feel the same way about it

Wow, that is deep and beautifully said 😥
