After an Afternoon
Jason Mraz Lyrics

Dreams that hardly touch our complexions truest faults
If room enough for both my drowsy spirit shall fall
Bold waves tumble to the season of my heart
Where you have offered my faith and my trust
Until all is lost into the beauty of the day.
But there is something in the way you laugh
Aspects of life they confuse me
You and your thesis amuse me.
After an afternoon with you
And your rich brown eyes
Your lips and your dark hair
Elbows and exposed knees tossing toward the ceiling
After an afternoon.
Face to palm
Tear to tear
Mouth to tongue
Heart to ground
I am in love.
The lyrics of Jason Mraz's song "After an Afternoon" capture the introspective thoughts and emotions of the singer as they navigate the complexities of love, trust, and understanding. The opening lines, "I bare my windowed self untamed and untrained," suggest that the singer is being vulnerable and honest with themselves and their emotions. They are willing to expose their flaws and imperfections in the pursuit of genuine connection.
The second line, "Dreams that hardly touch our complexions truest faults," is a powerful metaphor for the way in which our aspirations and desires often fail to align with the messy reality of our lives. The singer recognizes that there is room for both their dreams and their shortcomings in their heart and embraces the bold waves that come with it.
The refrain of the song, "After an afternoon with you," suggests the singer has found solace and understanding in the presence of the person they are addressing. The specific details of their appearance, "rich brown eyes," "dark hair," "elbows and exposed knees tossing toward the ceiling," convey a sense of familiarity and intimacy. The final stanza, "Face to palm, tear to tear, mouth to tongue, heart to ground, I am in love," reveals that the singer has fallen in love with the person they have spent the afternoon with.
Overall, "After an Afternoon" explores the themes of vulnerability, intimacy, and the complexities of human connection. It is a song that captures the joy and confusion of falling in love, and the courage it takes to embrace one's true self.
