Back To The Earth
Jason Mraz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Whenever my head starts to hurt
Before it goes from bad to feeling worse
I turn off my phone, I get down low
And put my hands in the dirt

I try to stop the world from moving so fast
Try and get a grip on where I'm at
And simplify this dizzy life
And get my feet in the grass

I'm going back to the earth
I'm going back to the earth
I'm going back to work
I'm going back to the earth

The only explanation for a high rise
Must be that everybody wants to get high
And move on up
To a deluxe
Apartment in the sky

Well, the higher we go, the taller we grow
We lose sight of the land below
Well, you can have your place
Up in outer space
'Cause my home is where my food is grown

I'm going back to the earth
I'm going back to the earth
I'm going back to work
I'm going back to the earth

I'm going back to the earth
(Back to the earth)
(Back to work)
(Back to the earth)

We are animals (we are animals)
We are wild (we are wild)
We started with the motion
At the bottom of the ocean
Now we're swinging from the tops of the trees

We are animals (we are animals)
We are wild (we are wild)
And to truly be forgiven
We must all get back to living
With the land in harmony

I'm going back to the earth
I'm going back to the earth
I'm going back to work
I'm going back to the earth

(Back to the earth)
I'm going back (Back to the earth)
I'm going back to work
I'm going back to the earth

(Back to the earth)
(Back to the earth)
(Back to work)
(Back to the earth)

(Back to the earth)
(Back to the earth)

(Back to work)
(Back to the earth)

Overall Meaning

The song "Back to the Earth" by Jason Mraz is essentially a call to return to nature and the simpler ways of life. In the first verse, Mraz tells us that when his mind becomes cluttered, he turns off his phone, gets down on the ground, and puts his hands in the dirt to reconnect with the earth. He tries to slow down the dizzying pace of modern life and re-establish a connection with nature. The chorus repeats the idea that he is "going back to the earth" and "back to work", which seems to imply that he sees farming or gardening as an important form of work that connects him with the earth.

In the second verse, Mraz questions the trend of building ever taller buildings and skyscrapers, wondering if the desire to be high up in the sky is a reflection of everyone's desire to be high, and move away from the realities of life on earth. He suggests that in doing so, we lose sight of the ground under our feet and the importance of the land. The bridge of the song acknowledges that humans are animals and that we started at the bottom of the ocean before evolving to live on land. And in order to find forgiveness and harmony with the earth, we must heed the call to return back to the basics and live in tune with nature.

Overall, the song is a powerful reminder that we need to stay grounded in order to find peace and happiness. It encourages us to embrace our animal nature and reconnect with nature by going back to our roots, cultivating the land, and finding fulfillment in the simple pleasures of life.

Absolutely. Isn't it so refreshing to see him stay faithful to his positive, lovely and up-beat attitude no matter how large his platform is? It almost seems to fuel his inspiration to spread the message of positivety. I love him.
