You And I Both
Jason Mraz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Was it you who spoke the words
That things would happen but not to me
Oh things are gonna happen naturally
Oh taking your advice
And I'm looking on the bright side
And balancing the whole thing
Oh, but often times those words
And it get tangled up in lines
And the bright lights turn to night
Oh, until the dawn it brings
Another day to sing about the magic that was you and me

'Cause you and I both loved
What you and I spoke of
And others just read of
Others only read of the love, the love that I love, yeah

See I'm all about them words
Over numbers, unencumbered numbered words
Hundreds of pages, pages, pages for words
More words then I had ever heard and I feel so alive

'Cause you and I both loved
What you and I spoke of
And others just read of
And if you could see me now, oh love, love
You and I, you and I
Not so little you and I anymore
And with this silence brings a moral story
More importantly evolving is the glory of a boy

'Cause you and I both loved
What you and I spoke of
And others just read of
And if you could see me now
Well I'm almost finally out of
I'm finally out of
Finally deedeedeedee
Well I'm almost finally, finally
Well I'm free, oh, I'm free

And it's okay if you have to go away
Oh just remember the telephones, well they work in both ways
But if I never ever hear them ring
If nothing else I'll think the bells inside
Have finally found you someone else and that's okay
'Cause I'll remember everything you sang

'Cause you and I both loved
What you and I spoke of
And others just read of
And if you could see me now
Well then I'm almost finally out of

I'm finally out of, finally, deedeeededede
Well I'm almost finally, finally, out of words

Overall Meaning

In "You and I Both," Jason Mraz explores the complexity of relationships, mourning and celebrating the love that was once shared. In the beginning of the song, Mraz questions if it was his partner who warned him about the possibility of heartbreak, but he ignored it, thinking it could never happen to him. He decides to take the advice anyways and tries his best to look on the bright side, but struggles with the weight of his emotions. He reminisces on the bright lights that turned into darkness, until the new dawn provided a fresh start to a new day.

Mraz declares his love for words and poetry, stating that he is more captivated by them than numbers, and is thrilled by the volume of them he has discovered. The chorus repeats the idea that the love he shared with his partner was unique and special, that others could never fully understand it despite reading about it. As the song draws to a close, Mraz accepts that sometimes relationships end, and in his heart, he will always cherish the love once shared.

“Things will happen, but not to me. Things are gonna happen naturally.” This lyric was advice given to me by an ex-girlfriend. We were still close friends, though. She was much wiser than I and was helping me evolve. Instead of sitting around feeling sorry for yourself, focusing on lack, write a list of things you’re grateful for – and presence abundance in your life! I did and it worked. The song isn’t about that person, but it was my jumping off point to pen a thank you song to my first girlfriend; a wordsmith who inspired me to think and rethink, to write and rewrite, and to not give a fart and just sing from the heart. She and I wrote the lyrics to my earliest coffee shop setlist, many of which were based on her poems (“After an Afternoon” and “0% Interest,” to name a few). I’m so grateful for the relationship we had. We were young. Under 21. But our magic together felt infinite. We would never run out of words.

I forgot how much I love this song until I heard it again recently. I cannot believe it is 20 years old! I first saw you perform back in 2003 when you opened for Chantal Kreviazuk. Such a great show!
