When a teenage Reeves encountered the works of Bob Dylan and James Taylor, it set off a chain of events. First he began working on his own songwriting, combining the classic singer/songwriter style with more modern influences like Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens. He then dropped out of college and moved from Iowa, where he then lived, eventually landing in California. The second person he met upon arrival was future pop star Colbie Caillat. The two hit it off immediately and it didn't take long for their friendship to turn into a songwriting partnership, one that would create the foundation for Caillat's hit album Coco. The songs that weren't reserved for Coco ended up on Reeves' EP Hearts Are Magnets, which appeared in 2006 on the Dancing Squirrel label. The full-length The Magnificent Adventures of Heartache followed in 2007.
Reeves signed to Warner Bros Records in 2008 with the help of Kara DioGuardi and released an album and an EP with the label. He again self-released an album in 2011 with The Lovesick.
Helium Hearts
Jason Reeves Lyrics

We're floating away from the fortune and fame
And your lips are mine, they're raspberry wine
Your body's a map i will follow into the sky
Cause what you got is all that i want, it's all that I want
And still that's not enough, it's not enough
(chorus)
Helium hearts we're falling skyward
We're never coming down
We're so high, the city below gets small and quiet
Every breath just makes us lighter
We're never coming down...
Further we go we're losing our clothes
One shoe at a time thrown over the side
Like our fears and doubts we cast them out
Till nothing is left and we're standing together now
Cause what we got is all that we want, its all that we want
And that's always enough, enough for us
(chorus)
Cause we're on fire walking love's highest burning wire
Helium hearts we're falling skyward
We're never coming down
We're so high, the city below gets small and quiet
Every breath just makes us lighter
We're never coming down...
Yeah yeah...I can't say no...
(chorus)
Cause we're on fire walking love's highest burning wire
Helium hearts we're falling skyward
We're never coming down
We're so high, the city below gets small and quiet
Every breath just makes us lighter
We're never coming down...
The lyrics of Jason Reeves's song "Helium Hearts" describe a couple who are deeply in love and seem to be transcending the material world as they float higher and higher into the sky, leaving behind the hustle and bustle of the city below. The opening lines, "Over the lights of sunset and vine, we're floating away from the fortune and fame," suggest that they are seeking to escape from the materialism and superficiality of modern life, and are finding a deeper sense of connection with each other as they do so. The lyrics go on to describe the couple shedding their clothes and fears, casting off their doubts, and standing together in a state of pure love and trust.
The recurrent metaphor of "helium hearts" conveys a sense of lightness and buoyancy, as if the couple's hearts are so filled with love that they can float away like balloons. The chorus reinforces this idea: "Helium hearts we're falling skyward, we're never coming down." The city below becomes smaller and quieter as they rise higher, until it disappears altogether. Every breath they take makes them feel lighter, and they seem to be caught in a sublime state of ecstasy and transcendence.
Overall, "Helium Hearts" is a romantic and dreamy song that celebrates the power of love to lift us up and carry us beyond the limits of everyday life. The language is poetic and evocative, conjuring up vivid images of floating high above the world with someone you love. While the song may be open to different interpretations, one possible reading is that it is a love letter to the idea of escaping from the pressures of modern society and finding refuge in the joy and beauty of human connection.
