When a teenage Reeves encountered the works of Bob Dylan and James Taylor, it set off a chain of events. First he began working on his own songwriting, combining the classic singer/songwriter style with more modern influences like Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens. He then dropped out of college and moved from Iowa, where he then lived, eventually landing in California. The second person he met upon arrival was future pop star Colbie Caillat. The two hit it off immediately and it didn't take long for their friendship to turn into a songwriting partnership, one that would create the foundation for Caillat's hit album Coco. The songs that weren't reserved for Coco ended up on Reeves' EP Hearts Are Magnets, which appeared in 2006 on the Dancing Squirrel label. The full-length The Magnificent Adventures of Heartache followed in 2007.
Reeves signed to Warner Bros Records in 2008 with the help of Kara DioGuardi and released an album and an EP with the label. He again self-released an album in 2011 with The Lovesick.

Everything you believe
Doesn't mean it's not real
Don't doubt in the dark
What you knew in the light
Just remember how it made you feel
Always coming back to you
And even when the clouds get dark
And they surround you
All you need to know is my love goes on
Like the sun
And it rise and fall
For no one else but you
And it shines
Every day, every night
And it goes on
Like the sun
My love
The moon is living proof
That the sun is always burning
Even in the darkest night
This is your reminder
I am on fire
Even when I'm out of sight
And we're illuminated
Even when it's raining
Nothing is gonna burn us out
We go on
Like the sun
And we rise and fall
For no one else
It's true
We will shine
Every day, every night
We go on
Like the sun
My love
Like the stars
We're all born from the light
I was made to be by your side
For the rest of our time
My love goes on
Like the sun
And it rise and fall
For no one else but you
And it shines
Every day, every night
And it goes on
Like the sun
My love
It's like the sun
Like the sun
The lyrics to Jason Reeves's song "Like the Sun" speak to the idea that even when things are difficult and it's hard to maintain faith and belief, love can still shine through. The first verse is a reminder that just because things may not be visible, it doesn't mean they aren't real. In the darkness, it can be hard to hold on to what we know to be true in the light, but the chorus serves as a reminder that love goes on like the sun. It rises and falls for no one else but the person it's directed towards, and it shines every day and night. It's a constant, unchanging force that remains strong no matter what may be happening around it.
The second verse reinforces this idea, comparing love to the moon and the sun. The moon is proof that the sun is always burning, even if we can't always see it. Similarly, love is always present, even if it may not be outwardly visible. The song ends on a hopeful note, with the idea that we are all born from the light, and that love will continue to shine like the sun for the rest of our time.
Overall, "Like the Sun" is a song about the enduring power of love, even in difficult times. It encourages listeners to hold on to their beliefs and to remember that love is a constant, unchanging force that will always be present.
