When a teenage Reeves encountered the works of Bob Dylan and James Taylor, it set off a chain of events. First he began working on his own songwriting, combining the classic singer/songwriter style with more modern influences like Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens. He then dropped out of college and moved from Iowa, where he then lived, eventually landing in California. The second person he met upon arrival was future pop star Colbie Caillat. The two hit it off immediately and it didn't take long for their friendship to turn into a songwriting partnership, one that would create the foundation for Caillat's hit album Coco. The songs that weren't reserved for Coco ended up on Reeves' EP Hearts Are Magnets, which appeared in 2006 on the Dancing Squirrel label. The full-length The Magnificent Adventures of Heartache followed in 2007.
Reeves signed to Warner Bros Records in 2008 with the help of Kara DioGuardi and released an album and an EP with the label. He again self-released an album in 2011 with The Lovesick.
Simple Song

Every single word gonna come out wrong
I'll keep you in my heart where you belong
You're just too good, too good for a simple song
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do
I can try to fit your beauty in the verse of two
The color of your eyes when I kiss you
The feeling of your skin on a cool summer night
The taste of your lips on the star light
Nothing I say will ever be right
Cause you're just too good, too good for a song
Every single word gonna come out wrong
I'll keep you in my heart where you belong
You're just too good, too good for a simple song
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do
A simple song
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do
A simple
I can try to catch you on my favorite melody
The one in the morning, the birds sing
I wake until I have you then I set you free
Cause I know that you'll come back to me
But nothing I say will ever be real
Cause you're just too good, too good for a song
Every single word gonna come out wrong
I'll keep you in my heart where you belong
You're just too good, too good for a simple song
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do
A simple song
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do
A simple song
Cause you're just too good, too good for a song
Every single word gonna come out wrong
I'll keep you in my heart where you belong
You're just too good, too good, too good
Just too good, too good for a song
Every single word gonna come out wrong
I'll keep you in my heart where you belong
You're just too good, too good for a simple song
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do
A simple song
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do

I can never fit your beauty in the verse of two-
The lyrics to Jason Reeves's song "Simple Song" talk about the impossibility of capturing the full beauty of a person in just a song. The singer acknowledges that every word he sings will fail to fully describe his subject's qualities. He tries to fit in the color of her eyes, the feeling of her skin, and the taste of her lips, but concludes that her beauty is too grand to be captured in such a simplistic manner. He then goes on to express how too good she is for his simple song, and states that every word he sings will come out wrong. Nevertheless, he promises to keep her in his heart where she belongs.
The song is a sweet tribute to someone so beautiful that ordinary words won't do justice. It's a narrative about the limitations of language and how certain beauty, in all its grandeur, cannot be contained in expressions of words. The repetition of the phrase "do, do, do" reinforces the simplicity of the song, which falls short of describing the grandeur of the subject. The use of metaphor, such as the bird's morning melody, is carefully crafted to make the song relatable and illustrate the depth of the subject's beauty.
