Bus' it

We gon' go through a couple of things tonight
We gon' go- we gon' party, of course
Go through some 'motional songs, we gon' take it all the way back for y'all
Then we gon' keep it in the truest essence of hip-hop: the battle
We gotta keep it at the battle, right y'all?
Y'all ready for that?
Alright
Let's do it

Lemme hear y'all

R.O.C., we running this rap sh-
Memphis Bleek, we running this rap sh-
B. Sigel, we running this rap shit
Uh, uh, uh, yeah

(Watch out, we run New York!)

The takeover, the break's over, homie
God MC, me (Jay-Hova)
Hey lil' soldier, you ain't ready for war
R.O.C. too strong for y'all
It's like bringing a knife to a gunfight, pen to a test
Your chest in the line of fire with your thin-ass vest
You bringing them boys to men, how them boys gon' win?
This is grown man B.I., get you rolled into triage, bi-atch
Your reach ain't long enough, dunny
Your peeps ain't strong enough, uh-uh
Roc-A-Fella is the army, better yet the navy
Sure, we will kidnap your babies, spit at your lady
We bring knife to fistfight, kill your Grandma
We kill you iddy bitty ants with a sledgehammer
Don't let me do it to 'em, dunny, 'cause I overdo it
So he won't confuse it with just rap music

R.O.C., we running this rap sh-
B. Sigel we running this rap sh-

Get zipped up in plastic when it happens, that's it
Freeway, we running this rap sh-

Chris and Neef, we running this rap shh
(Watch out! We run New York!)

I don't care if you Mobb Deep, I hold triggers to crews
You little, I got money stacks bigger than you
When I was pushing weight, back in '88
You was a ballerina, I got the pictures, I seen ya
Then you dropped "Shook Ones," switched your demeanor
Well, we don't believe you, you need more people
Roc-A-Fella, students of the game, we passed the class
'Cause nobody can read you dudes like we do
Don't let 'em gas you, like, "Jigga is ass and won't clap you"
Trust me on this one, I'll detach you
Mind from spirit, body from soul
They'll have to hold a mass, put your body in a hole
Oh no, you're not on my level, get your brakes tweaked
I sold what your whole album sold in my first week
You guys don't want it with Hov
Ask Nas, he don't want it with Hov, no!

I know you miss it, Nas, the (fame!)
But along with celebrity comes 'bout seventy shots to your frame, homie
You's a (lame!)
Know you's the fag model for Karl Kani, Esco ads
Went from Nasty Nas to Esco's trash
Had a spark when you started but now you're just garbage
Fell from top ten to not mentioned at all
To your bodyguard's Oochie Wally's verse better than yours
Matter of fact you had the worst flow on the whole entire song
But I know the sun don't shine, then son don't shine
That's why your (lame) career's come to an end
It's only so long fake thugs can pretend
Homie, you ain't live it, you witnessed it from your folks' pad
You scribbled it in your notepad and created your life
I showed you your first TEC, on tour with Large Professor
Then I heard your album 'bout your TEC on the dresser
So yeah, I sampled your voice, you was using it wrong
You made it a hot line, I made it a hot song
And you ain't get a coin, homie, you was getting plugged then
I know who I paid, God, Serchlite Publishing
Use your (brain!)
You said you've been in this ten, I've been in it five, smarten up, Nas
Four albums in ten years, homie? I could divide
That's one every two, two of them things was due
One was (nah), the other was Illmatic
That's a one-hot-album-every-ten-year average
And that's so (lame)
Homie, switch up your flow
Your shit is garbage, what you trying to kick, knowledge?
You cats gonna learn to respect the king
Don't be the next contestant on that Unplugged screen
Because you-know-(who) did you-know-what with you-know-who
But let's keep that between me and you, ma

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jay-Z's song Takeover tell a story of hip-hop dominance and superiority. The song starts with Jay-Z hyping up the crowd and assuring them that they are going to have a good time, but they are also going to get down to the essence of hip-hop, which is the battle. He then proceeds to rap about how he and his Roc-A-Fella crew are running the rap game, naming his fellow artists and challenging other rappers who are trying to compete with them. Jay-Z asserts his dominance over his competition, telling them that they are not even close to being on his level. He even takes shots at Nas, questioning his credibility and talent as a rapper.

Throughout the song, Jay-Z's confidence and superiority are evident. He and his crew are the kings of the rap game, and he is not afraid to let others know it. He uses his lyrics to challenge and belittle his competition, showcasing his dominance and power. The song is a reminder of Jay-Z's immense talent as a rapper, his influence in the music industry, and his ability to command a crowd with his words.

@@majestymxnt7384 He was correct? Yeah, about himself 🙄 Let's look at the facts...

Illmatic dropped 4/19/94 while Takeover dropped 9/11/01. That's 7 years 4 months and 3 weeks, it's not 10 years ...so we already disproved the bar 🤷‍♂️

Now what's the criteria for a hot album? Commercial success or critical acclaim?

Illmatic - 5 Mics in The Source
It Was Written - 4 Mics in The Source and went double platinum within in 3 months
I Am - 4 1/2 Mics in The Source and sold 470,000 its first week and went platinum within a month
Nastradamus - sold 232,000 its first week and went platinum in less than a month

Either way you go, Nas has 3 hot albums in the given time frame 🤷‍♂️ And I know, Nas debuted in 1991 on Live at the BBQ and that makes 10 years...still don't make a difference, it makes no sense

Jay Z debuted in July of 1989 on Hawian Sophie, so he has til July of 1999...

Reasonable Doubt - 4 Mics in The Source but it only sold 43,000 in its first week (less than Illmatic). It also didn't go platinum til 2002
Vol. 1 4 Mics in The Source but only sold 138,000 its first week
Vol 2. - 4 1/2 Mics in The Source and sold 350,000 its first week

So critically, Jay has 3 hot albums ...but commercially, he only has 1 hot album in 10 years. So Jays bar isn't true about Nas in any way, shape, or form...but can be said about Jay 🤷‍♂️

"So yeah, I sampled your voice, you was using it wrong" is one of the hardest diss bars ever

@jasonmoan8269

Except Serch confirmed Nas owned his publishing from that. "All I did was give you a style to run with..."

@LOKEYEXCLUSIVE

You made it a hot line I made it a hot song

@chrisgullett4332

That is just standard lines from battle raps. That is what battle rap was built on, accusing someone of sounding horrible, accusing them of stealing your style, accusing them of stealing your beats etc. Not to mention, nobody steals anything from anybody if they think it is garbage. Jay Z has always stole lines from everybody. Remember Camron doing Swagger Jacker? In Swagger Jacker he lays a compilation of lines Jay Z has stolen from everybody, and he stole so many lines from Biggie Camron says he needs to give his publishing to Biggie's mom. Then Camron says one of the fuunniest lines ever in a diss track. He says even if Jay Z comes back at him he won't believe he wrote it, and he will probably just steal some lines from James Brown or Frankie Lymon from 1968. Swagger Jacker is basically a diss song without Camron ever rapping, just exposing how much Jay Z steals from everybody, then saying a couple funny things in between listening to Jay Z lyrics he stole from others. Camron did have a couple good Jay Z diss tracks. It is really unbelievable how many lines he stole from Biggie. When you hear just a few of them in Swagger Jacker you start thinking damn Jay Z cannot make a song without using lines he stole from Biggie.

@tinkyeinsteinruby8520

Jay is still paying to this day for trying to make it a hot song. 50% publishing of any printing of Dead President belongs to NaS.

Nobody want to say it, Jay had to sample NaS to be noticed. NaS fathered Jay.

@imhigherthanagiraffesassin5060

jay spilled tha tea throughout third verse and insecure Nasir fans still crying about it 2 decades after lol. can't handle the truth

For Nas to survive this, I realize how great he truly was.

Times were different 20 years ago bro... 3 months was reasonable... but do you remember jigga crying on hot 97 after Ether did what it did?
