Overall Meaning

“Ride” is a collaborative hip-hop track by Jay-Z and Notorious B.I.G. released in 2001. The rappers describe their experience in the streets, flaunting their wealth and skills. In the verse, Jay-Z boasts of his abilities as a rapper and producer, referring to himself as "S. Carter" and "ghostwriter," and claiming he has written songs for others. Biggie, on the other hand, brings his signature bravado and describes his lavish lifestyle with his expensive cars, homes, and jewelry.

The chorus of “Ride” asks repeatedly "How many y'all wanna ride tonight?" with "ride" and "die" being used interchangeably, urging listeners to choose which camp they belong to. The song's hook is an appeal to join the ride-or-die lifestyle where individuals remain loyal to their group, even in the toughest of times. Overall, the song is a celebration of the hip-hop lifestyle, wealth, and success, or as they say, "riding high."

Some interesting facts about “Ride” include that it was one of the last verses recorded by Biggie before his untimely death in 1997. Secondly, the track was released as a part of The Notorious B.I.G.'s posthumous album "Born Again," which came out on December 7, 1999. Additionally, “Ride” also features Stevie J, a member of the R&B group 112. J was also a frequent collaborator of Bad Boy Records at the time. Jay-Z later released a remix of “Ride” featuring his Roc-A-Fella labelmate and fellow Brooklynite rapper M.O.P. Besides, “Ride” became an instant classic and an essential part of hip-hop culture, being cited by many aspiring rappers as a major influence.

As for the chords, the instrumental background of “Ride” has a heavy R&B influence and predominantly features a guitar riff with a simple chord progression. The progression is based on Fmaj7, Gmaj7, and Amaj7 chords played in a loop, creating a mellow and smooth feeling. The song also features a sample from “Summer Madness” by Kool & The Gang, which forms the basis of the instrumental foundation. Biggie and Jay-Z's vocals are layered over the guitar riff and sample. Thus, the chord progression is relatively simple and repetitive, allowing the instrumental and vocal elements to resonate effectively with one another.
