Pray
Jay-Z feat. Beyonce feat. Rob Dougan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Delivery me from my enemies, oh God
Defend me from those that rise up against me
Deliver me from the work of inequity
And save me, from the Bloody men

Look, mind state of a gangster from the 40's
Meet the business mind of Motown's Berry Gordy
Turn crack rock into a chain of 40/40's
Sorry my jewelry so gaudy
Slid into the party with my new pair of Mauris
America, meet the gangsta Shawn Corey
Hey young world, wanna hear a story?
Close your eyes and you could pretend you're me
A cut from the cloth of the Kennedy's
Frank Sinatra having dinner with the Genovese
This is the genesis of a nemesis
Mother America's not witnessed since
The Harlem Renaissance birthed black businesses
This is the tale of lost innocence's, as the incense burn
And the turntables turn and that Al Greens plays
I see my mother's afro, as mama taps her toes as she rolls her J's
And my papa just left the house, in search of the killer of my uncle Ray
And she's tryna calm my nerves, as I observe this is just one day
And what tomorrow has in store, we could never be sure, so all we can do is
Pray

Because of Your strength
While I walked upon thee
For God is my defense (pray for me)

As I head towards my homeroom, I observe the ruins, dope needles on the ground
I hear a car go, "Vrooom", drug dealer in the BM with the top down
As the girls start to giggle, I ask, "Why you laugh?", they say, "You too little
One day you'll understand, when you become a man 'bout things you have to get you"
Fast forward, freeze frame on my pistol
Fist full of dollars, ignorance is so blissful
I didn't choose this life, this life chose me
Around here is the shit that you just do
I just left school, the same BM is pulled over by the boys dressed blue
They had they guns drawn, screaming, "Just move"
"Or is there something else you suggest we can do"
He made his way to the trunk, opened it like, "Huh"
A treasure chest was removed
Cops said he'll be back next month
What we call corrupt, he called paying dues
Now when the rules is blurred, as they is and were, what am I to do?
But pray, pray the Lord forgive me
Pray He guides me by what I'm 'bout go through
Pray

Delivery me in thy righteousness
And cause me to escape
And climb thine air unto me
Save me Lord (pray for me)

Geah, anywhere there's oppression, the drug profession
Flourishes like beverages, refreshing (ah)
Sweet taste of sin, everything I've seen made me everything I am
Bad drug dealer or I victim, I beg
What came first? Moving chickens or the egg?
This is why I be so fresh,I'm tryna beat life 'cause I can't cheat death
Treat shame with shamelessness, aim stainless at anuses
You know who's game this is
Move coke like Pepsi it don't matter what the brand name is
I stand behind mine, everything I do I'm a man behind mine
I'm not a angel, I'm sure, but every night before I lay
I drop my knees to the floor and I pray

The name shall endure forever
The name shall be continued as long as the sun (pray for me)
Men shall be blessed in Him
All nations shall call Him blessed

In your name I pray (pray for me)
Lord bless us

Overall Meaning

The song "Pray" by Jay-Z feat. Beyoncé Knowles is a powerful lyrical journey through the struggles, fears, and hopes of growing up in an environment of violence, oppression, and poverty. Jay-Z starts by asking God for deliverance from his enemies and the works of inequity, setting the tone of the song as a prayer for strength and salvation. He then reflects on his life as a gangster with a business mind, turning crack rock into a chain of 40/40's (a reference to his chain of upscale sports bars), but also striving to be cut from the same cloth as the Kennedys and the Sinatras. Beyoncé echoes Jay-Z's call for divine protection and guidance, adding her angelic voice to the chorus, "Pray for me."

The song's verses follow a narrative thread of Jay-Z's childhood memories and present struggles, from his encounter with drug dealers and police officers in his school days to his reflections on the drug profession and his own mortality. He speaks candidly about the allure and danger of street life, as well as his own doubts and fears about his choices and their consequences. He also expresses his faith in God and his hope for redemption, despite the odds against him. The refrain, "Pray for me," becomes a mantra of resilience and faith, a call for unity and compassion, and a reminder of the power of prayer.

The song's lyrics offer a poignant commentary on the social, political, and cultural context of black America in the 21st century, from the legacy of slavery and segregation to the challenges of economic inequality and mass incarceration. Jay-Z and Beyoncé's collaboration on "Pray" showcases their artistic and personal chemistry, as well as their shared commitment to social justice and spiritual growth.

@Believe6

*smiling ear to ear* This is one off the best songs I have heard in my life. How everything comes together just perfectly, how you can feel Rob's musical talnet with Jay's musical talnet just mixed together coming together in one perfect symphony of synergy bad ass

@chrisc8047

This is absolutely awesome, needs to be on Spotify... I love the original but this is next level.

@alexwmusic

A lot of people have sent me a message wondering how to get a hold of this remix. It was apart of a mixtape called "Hovito's Way" that I was involved with. I've reuploaded the mixtape again, just check the "information box" to this video :) Thanks again for the nice comments, I really appreciate it! :)

@Bilama

Amazing! Remember listening to this a decade ago

@413xt

What a brilliant idea to put Jay Z and Rob Dougan together.. Excellent work.. I don't understand why this video has so few views.. Spread the word..

@corvettez06usa

rob dougan's music is so brilliant it actually makes rap pleasurable.

@alexwmusic

Thanks, appreciate that! :) Unfortunately it would be too hard to get together the entire mixtape in WAV because of many factors like bouncing out all the tracks once again in WAV, then find somewhere to storage them and the fact that we were 3 different people who made the entire album. We did our best when we compressed them to mp3 so don't worry, there's not a huge quality loss from wave to mp3, and many of the samples I used were very old and completely busted records anyway so, hehe :)

@cantgetthenameiwant

Amazing work man. Good to hear there are still good remixes out there! This may be a strange request (or maybe not), but do you have your hovito mixtape in WAV format? Much appreciated, keep up the good work!!!

@alexwmusic

Hey! That piano in the background is sampled from "Rob D - Clubbed to Death" and since that is such a big part of this remix I chose to add his name to the credits to give him recognition. That is what this remix is all about, to make hip hop heads aware of "Rob D" and to make Rob D fans aware of Jay-Z. Just taking the best of both worlds and mash it up! :) Thanks for the comment!

@derickonfire

I love this song, thank you! I've listened to it probably ten times in the past few days.
