A group whose sound and songs were more pop than soul, Jay & the Techniques earned some points for the playful, joyous "Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie," which was their lone Top 10 R&B and pop hit in 1967 on Smash.[1]

Career

The band was best known for its Top 10 debut single, "Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie", which was released in 1967 and reached #6 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart.[2] The track was arranged by Joe Renzetti, and written by Maurice Irby, Jr. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[3] Although this song served as the band's primary hit, the group also captured various chart positions with "Keep the Ball Rolling" (#14) and "Strawberry Shortcake". "Keep the Ball Rolling" also notched up sales in excess of a million copies, to secure a second gold disc for this group.[3]

However, its position on the 1960s pop charts declined after "Baby Make Your Own Sweet Music" was released. Jay & the Techniques made their final effort with its R&B hit, "Number Onderful", but after that, the group disbanded.

In 1996, Mercury Records released a compilation album of the band's hits entitled The Best of Jay & the Techniques.

I was ten years old and was already a music lover when this song was out. Living just a few miles from Allentown Pa. where Jay and The Techniques came from. They were every local young musicians inspiration. Till this I still love the late 60"s music especially anything with horns. Great Song!

"Keep The Ball Rollin'" was the follow-up to Jay & the Techniques' July 1967 debut hit "Apples Peaches Pumpkin Pie." This great track -- which I like better than "Apples Peaches..." -- continued the theme of crossing childhood games witrh romance and debuted October 21, 1967, peaking at #14 over its 12 week chart run. Their next single, "Strawberry Shortcake," was nowhere as good and could only struggle to #39. The group never make the national Top 40 again.

I'm with you! I like this one better than "Apples, Peaches...." It was a top 5 hit in NYC on WMCA and WABC and reached #1 in Philadelphia for a week on WIBG. Also reached top 5 on WRKO Boston. Big hit on the I-95 corridor, not so big nationally.

They played a number of our High School dances at Wm. Allen High in Allentown. They had contracted for the dances, and then they hit it nationally...and still honored the contracts. The drummer, Carl Lipowitsch (sp?) was a wrestler at the school and a star of the senior class movie two years ahead of me. What a wonderful time in my life.

Mom loved this song. She was all of 26 years old, behind the wheel of her '67 baby blue Mustang rag top and driving us to the beach when this song was on the charts. T shirt over yellow bikini, sandals, shades and kerchief wrapping long black hair "just like Cher," as she would say. Yeah, I was just a kid, but I wasn't so dumb that I didn't notice guys hitting on her all the time. Boy, she could wink and flirt her way out of speeding tickets like no one's business.

When this song was playing in 1967, it was broadcast on AM ( amplitude modulation ) radio as all pop music in the 1950's and 1960's...Back in those days I was 14 and would hear it on BOSS RADIO 93 KHJ, or also on KFWB Channel 98... ( Both in Los Angeles ) Sometimes I would hear this song in my dad's gas station while I pumped regular gasoline for 18.9 cents per gallon, or Premium Ethyl for 36.9 cents per gallon...NEVER will we see those prosperous days again..GOD help us..Sierra Cuban, Miami

Well the guys who wrote this, Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell, wrote the song that holds the record for the most key changes on a hit single, "Opus 17 (Don't You Worry 'Bout Me)" by the Four Seasons. That song modulates upward 5 times, and that actually ties it with "Mack the Knife" which formerly held the record. Linzer and Randell wrote this and other goodies such as "A Lover's Concerto" by the Toys and "Let's Hang On!" again by the Four Seasons.

I absolutely consider this to be bubblegum. It's a prototype for what came to be known as bubblegum - kid's games equated with love, kiddy game catch phrases( "on your mark get set" preceded "Simon says", "1,2,3 red light", etc,, etc,), pulsing beat, bright melody, danceable. And never forget the not-too-shocking revelation of bubblegum maestro Joey Levine in a not-too-long ago interview: "I always thought of myself as a soul singer."

I never heard of this song until 1990. That year the Cincinnati Reds were in first place from start to finish, including winning the Playoffs and World Series. WLW Radio would play this song after the Reds won a game as a way to tell the team to keep the ball rolling to victory.

The 60's were a great time for music and some other things, not politics. I lived through the time. Too much turmoil and loss of innocence. Think of it, a coup d'etat killed JFK; then MLK and RFK were shot. Vietnam tore at society's fabric. Drugs came out big time and values changed, not all for the good. No, the 60s were a unique time; but I'd argue against it being the best time. And... people blame the baby boomers, it wasn't us, but remnants of the greatest generation who were in charge. I respect the GG for their patriotism and courage, but some of the leaders of that era were scoundrels!

I also really liked this song when I was 11 years old -- but NOT better than the more wistful "Apple Peaches Pumpkin Pie" which (the same) production team was surely imitating. Both hits shared a really cool repeated or held note in Joe Renzetti's arrangements, probably a la The Supremes "set me free why don't you babe... you keep me hanging on". But I have to throw a little cold water on all you nostalgia-ists out there -- isn't it pretty sickening how acceptable it was -- and still is -- to constantly inculcate young kids, boys and girls both, with the sexually exploitive message that girls have to "put out" more sexually or boys will "drop them" -- "Keep the ball rolling...If you want me there when you call, Then girl it's all or nothing next time you do etc" So many comments about the "good old days" ignore this element of coercion. It wasn't really so innocent! (same kind of thing in Apple Peches Pumpkin: "I'm one step behind you, careful when I find you..." and so forth.) Sure, many or most of us "didn't [consciously] pay attention to the lyrics" but that message was EVERYWHERE in pop music! (why? because chasing and teasing and even play fighting and aggression are fun and can be exciting to listener of any age, and of course that can be legitimately and "innocently" sexually exciting. But when girls/women are not fully empowered it becomes coercion and abuse, still to this day just like in the 1500s or whenever)

At last I know the name of that second "mystery tune" that Max Weinberg's band occasionally played on Conan O'Brien's NBC show. Now if only I could find the name of the first one per the post I made here some time ago.
