@marmik961 it's really just do the unthinkable, none of us can tell you because you have to be the one to do it. Let's say something like making a TV show that only has one character in it, I don't know any show that's done something like that. But just because you do it doesn't mean it will be good, if it isn't good it doesn't matter if you did something different. You didn't make the audience care so you didn't introduce anyone to anything new because no one is watching it, so it's not groundbreaking if you're not breaking the ground for anyone. So really just think about something know one else really thinks about which is difficult lol. Not every show can be groundbreaking so don't work yourself trying to create something you don't even understand yourself

@marmik961 I would say a show like Avatar the Last Airbender did. It had story, maturity, relatability, characterization that you would have never seen in a american childrens cartoon. I wouldn't say Gravity Falls did, it's a good show but it wasn't the first to do what it did.

Oz should definitely be on here. It put HBO On the map and was the very first of its kind in terms of having dark and mature content, graphic violence and sex, dark and complex characters, characters getting killed off at any time, etc.

Honestly I’m surprised not to see Lost on here. Yeah the last few seasons suffered horrendously from the writer’s strike, but overall that show and its online cult following was very new and exciting. That was when people began screenshotting every single frame to analyze for clues, and Lost took advantage of its hardcore online following and put endless Easter eggs and secrets throughout the show.

Also... Will and Grace. That show was absolutely revolutionary for the LGBTQ+ community. It’s a topic shows still struggle with, more recent ones like Glee, Shadowhunters, and Andi Mack might not have ever happened without a show like Will & Grace.

I cannot agree with this enough. It owes a lot to Star Trek, but at the same time, it broke a lot of Star Trek's rules and often felt more like REAL LIFE in the future.

Babylon 5, if there is any justice, in 20 or 50 years will be admired and appreciated just like all the best Star Trek shows, The Twilight Zone and Lost.

Warner Bros. really hung the series out to dry with virtually no support, a low budget, bad marketing and they constantly threatened to cancel the series of which the worst part was the forth season had to be rushed to finish off the series leaving the fifth season watered down.

Not only did they bring us "I Love Lucy" but Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez were instrumental in bringing "The Twilight Zone" and "Star Trek" to television. They took a big chance on Rod Serling and Gene Roddenberry.

"Emergency!" (1972-79) had a big influence on medical procedurals (and was far more realistic than most of the ones today), "Perry Mason" (1957-66) pretty much set the standard for the courtroom drama, and "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" (1968-2001) and "Sesame Street" (1969-) were both landmark productions of children's television.

I kind of wish "Soap" (1977-81) had made the list. It is a timeless classic.

People in the comment section do not understand the difference between groundbreaking and good shows. As much as i love Breaking Bad and no matter how good it was acted and written, there was nothing really groundbreaking in that show. Sopranos and GOT are the most groundbreaking and influential shows of the last 20 years. Sopranos introduced the first television antihero. There is like 6-7 high budget fantasy shows in the making thanks to GOT. Every new big show is called "The next Game of Thrones". People call shows like The Expanse "The Game of Thrones in space" etc.

To call Twin Peaks groundbreaking is a bit of an ubderstatement. Its the reason we have all of the quality TV shows that we do today.

Twilight was great no doubt....but what many overlook..is that the show One step beyond...was before Twilight zone...though not quite as masterful as Twilight zone...Sterling admits that he based his show very closely on One step beyond. Even using himself as the Introducing story host at the beginning and the closing ; just as John Newland did..

I appreciate Star Trek being in the list, but it wasn't mentioned just how groundbreaking it really was. Not only did it set a standard for sci-fi shows that followed after it and became a staple in pop culture over the decades, but it did deal with the cultural issues of the day in its own way. What about being the first show to feature an inter-racial kiss? Doing that back in the 60s was extremely groundbreaking. Honestly I feel that this should have beat out The Simpsons. Of the two, I feel Star Trek did far more for TV and culture than The Simpsons has.

Twilight Zone was an excellent pick. Definitely still holds up today. So many memorable episodes. Time Enough at Last is my absolute favorite, but there are so many good ones. If you've never watched the series, please find the time. Such good storytelling.

love the show and it would be hard to argue with it being one of the earliest vampire-centered drama shows. Sadly, most people who are 35 or younger will only think of Buffy 1st. But FK predates Buffy and was in a lot of ways taking Vampire movies and translating them to a serialized tv show.

The only show I can think of, which was actually more of a Soap Opera, was Dark Shadows. An argument could be made for that over FK in terms of being groundbreaking, but FK stands out a lot in how it feels more like the classic Vampire movies, but done in episodes.

Although avatar the last Airbender doesn't meet the requirements per se, it's still one of the BEST cartoons to ever hit the air. I don't think that show had any effects on tv, it was just the best (cartoon).

Knock "The Real World" off the list completely and put "M^A*S*H" in its place. Love "Sopranos", but "Monty Python" should be at 4 and "All in the Family" at 3. "Sopranos" at maybe 5. The rest of the list is fine.

Dallas should be on the list - it essentially moved the 'daytime soap' format into mainstream night time TV - there's no 90210, Desperate Housewives etc. without it. 3. The Tonight Show (with Johnny Carson) should be on the list - all the talk shows, from Letterman, Conan, Kimmel, Ellen etc. are trying to be what it was.
