I have sang this song and honestly I was disappointed that a huge section of this song was cut in the film. The whole song itself is beautiful.

After hearing the stage musical, I really REALLY wish they had kept that verse of the song, in wich a more unstable and desperate side of Johanna is shown.
I do like how she is in the movie... but looking back it feels like a missed oportunity to make Johanna more than the Helpless Angelic Girl who is too innocent and pure to even THINK of ever doing any harm... while the musical showed her as a more complicated person, nearly driven mad by isolation and the fear of the man who had raised her as a daughter, and who now had started looking at her with lust.
You could really feel that she was so anxiously looking for ANY way out of there that she did not think twice before jumping at the chance to run away with a guy she barely knew. Her actually liking Anthony felt more like a pleasant plus in the more important matter of getting the HELL out of Turpin's house, before it was too late.
And it was also HER who killed the guardian in the asylum she was later put in. Anthony didn't dare shoot him, but Johanna took the gun and did it herself, as it seemed like he was going to have them chased (and she had also endured horrible things in there as well).
All the trauma and stress Johanna goes through actually has an effect of her mental state, right from the start, and we all get to see how much damage it caused her to have grown up as she did. And to me that's just so much more interesting!
By the end, Anthony is the only "pure" character in the story. The only one alive, who never killed anyone, and suffered no madness or thirst for revenge.
Even Toby kills Sweeney at the end, and Anthony also sees so many others die, too.
Having Johanna be more morally gray and complex would have been a great subvertion of the Damssel trope! But I guess Tim Burton likes Angelic Blonde Characters too much, ha ha...
