ne dis rien
Jean-Claude Brialy & Anna Karina Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Troubles images issues du temps
Messages d'enfant
Vagues voyages au gré d'avant

Ne lui dis pas
Ce n'est qu'à toi
Rêve tout bas
Ne lui dis pas

Tendres caresses, fièvres et sang
Les peaux s'entendent et se tendent
Paupières closes, qui te prend?

Ne lui dis pas
Ça sert à quoi
Ce n'est qu'à toi
Ne lui dis pas

On n'avoue rien si l'on est innocent
Les mots sont vains, les mystères indulgents
La pénombre éclaire
Du silence au mensonge
C'est l'espace des songes

Page après page, vie sur vie
Quand les questions dansent
N'est-ce que ça? Était-ce lui?

Ne lui dis pas
Ce n'est qu'à toi
Rêve plus bas
Ne lui dis pas

Qu'il est si tard, qu'il ne t'étonne plus
Qu'il ne sait pas et qu'il n'a jamais su
Que bientôt l'hiver
Si c'était à refaire
Mais "chut" mieux vaut se taire

Ne lui dis pas

Ne lui dis pas

Ne lui dis pas

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jean-Claude Brialy and Anna Karina's song Ne Dis Rien create a sense of desperation and longing. The first verse describes a sense of immobilization, either through fear or through the overwhelming influence of the other person. The lyrics suggest that the singer has lost themselves completely, and that they are unable to move or even function properly. They seem to be entirely controlled by the other person, who has taken everything from them.

The chorus pleads with the other person not to speak, but instead to follow the singer. There is an element of danger in these lyrics, as if the singer is leading the other person down a dark and uncharted path. However, the other person is urged not to be afraid and to trust in the singer's lead. The repetition of "ne dis rien" (don't say anything) emphasizes the importance of the silence between the two characters.

The final verse again emphasizes the all-consuming nature of the relationship, as the singer asks the other person to forget about tomorrow and to leave everything behind. The repeated line "ne pense plus à rien" (don't think about anything) suggests a desire to escape, to leave everything behind and simply be present in the moment with the other person.

Overall, the lyrics of Ne Dis Rien suggest a complicated and intense relationship, characterized by a sense of need and dependence.

One of Gainsbourg's best songs!

As a Brialy fan I "knew" Gainsbourg and thanks God I was able to watch Anna, not before a huge research. Fantastic soundtrack, lovely

Quel duo magnifique

The story, very basic, provides a pretext with the brillant soundtrack, that sounds so "french-pop", so 60's. The movie, made for the television, was shot with a experimental process that gives the beautiful bright color, almost similar of Technicolor. We can't unfortunately appreciate this here because of the poor quality.

I like Brialy, but Karina singing this one on one, closeup with Gainsbourg is more seductive.

Spectral Stranger

This always makes me sad,  reminds me of someone I know. I still don't understand the "comedy" title of this movie, seeing how it is actually sort of sad.
