The song Le Coureur by Jean-Jacques Goldman tells the story of a man who used to run on a secluded beach, until one day he was discovered by a man with a stopwatch. Later on, he is taken away from his simple life and trained to become a professional runner, losing touch with his roots and the joys of running for its own sake. He reflects on the strange and often lonely life he has led since then, and wonders if his departure from the peaceful world of his past was ultimately for better or for worse.
The lyrics are rich in metaphors and symbolism, exploring themes of identity, ambition, and the cost of success. The image of the runner as a free-spirited, carefree person is contrasted with the image of the professional athlete, who is trapped in a world of competition, sponsorship deals, and public scrutiny. The line "Les caresses étranges de la foule" (the strange caresses of the crowd) conveys a sense of the runner's isolation and disconnection from the world around him, as he feels like an object being passed back and forth among fans and sponsors. The final lines of the song leave the question of whether the runner's transformation was ultimately worth it up to the listener's interpretation, adding a touch of ambiguity to the story.
Overall, Le Coureur is a poignant meditation on the human cost of achieving success and the price we pay for pursuing our dreams.
