Jean-Jacques Goldman's song Veiller Tard is a contemplative piece about the thoughts and emotions that keep us up late at night. The opening lines describe the stillness and quietness at the end of the day, punctuated only by the sad barking of a dog. It is a rare moment when we find ourselves alone with our thoughts, and the silence can be unsettling as we contemplate our dreams and fears.
The song then moves on to explore the various experiences that keep us awake. The intersection of love and autumn, the depths of sorrow that we try to suppress, the forgotten faces that come back to haunt us, and the quiet moments of reflection are all part of the factors that prevent us from sleeping. The unspoken words that we wish we had said, the missed opportunities that keep us wondering, and the connections we make with others all contribute to the complex emotions that keep us up late at night.
Overall, the song is a poignant reminder of the power of our innermost thoughts and emotions to affect us deeply, and it encourages us to explore and understand them.
