Quand on aime on a toujours vingt ans
Jean-Pierre Ferland Lyrics

Tout ça pour une gonzesse
Qui m'avait eu par l'adresse
Et le faux cil
J'ai pris mon couteau et schlack!
Dans le dos
Il est mort comme le juge l'a dit
J'ai eu vingt ans
Quand on aime, on a toujours vingt ans
Quand on aime, on a toujours vingt ans

Comme ma culotte et ma veste
L'amour avec la jeunesse
Ça va d'soi
Mais il l'aimait trop et schlack!
Dans le dos
Il était né en 1951

Quand on aime, on a toujours vingt ans
Quand on aime, on a toujours vingt ans
Quand on aime, on a toujours vingt ans

Quand j'aurai purgé ma peine
Il ne faudra plus que j'aime
Comme avant
On n'peut pas avoir vingt ans
Toute sa vie
Pensez-y comme le juge l'a dit
Une autre fois

Quand on aime on a toujours vingt ans
Quand on aime on a toujours vingt ans
Quand on aime on a toujours vingt ans

Quand on aime on a toujours vingt ans
Vingt ans, vingt ans, vingt ans...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jean-Pierre Ferland's song "Quand on aime on a toujours vingt ans" speak about the eternal youthfulness that love brings in people's lives. The first verse is about a man who killed another man because of a girl who deceived him with false eyelashes and seductive charm. He is now in jail, having received the punishment for his crime. Despite his tragic fate, the man says that when one is in love, they always feel like they have the energy and passion of a twenty-year-old.

The second verse talks about the natural connection between love and youthfulness, and how this connection is even more intense when the lover is young. The man who was killed was born in 1951, the same year as Ferland, who thus imagines himself in his victim's shoes. The refrain repeats the idea that love makes people feel young and vibrant, no matter their age.

However, the last verse introduces a more somber note. After he has served his sentence, the singer of the song thinks he should not love someone as before, as he has learned the hard lesson that violent love never leads to anything good. Although love can make us feel like we are forever young, the juge (judge) reminds us that we should be careful not to become prisoners of our own passions.
