In 1961 he married Christine Sèvres. During his carrer, Ferrat has had some difficulty with the authorities owing to his humanist perpective and links with communism.
His most famous songs are: Que serais-je sans toi, Heureux celui qui meurt d'aimer, Potemkine, La montagne, Les feux de Paris, L'amour est cerise and many others.
His lyrics are very much influenced by french poet Aragon.

Dors petit homme
Dors petit frère
La nuit
A Bahia de tous les Saints
Bruisse de papier d'étain
D'ombres dures et familières
Tu t'endors le long des quais
Près des fûts abandonnés
Poings fermés dans la poussière
[Refrain]
La faim
Met sa robe d'apparat
C'est l'heure où l'on voit les rats
Regagner les grands navires
C'est l'heure
Où des financiers au bras
Les putains ouvrent leurs draps
En forme de tirelire
[Refrain]
Parfois
Tu écoutes les indiens
Parler de mal et de bien
Sur leurs siècles de misère
Tu vois
Le diable n'est qu'un pantin
Qui s'évanouit au matin
Quand tu lèves la paupière
[Refrain]
Hier
Sur les toits jaune orangé
L'oiseau qui te fait rêver
A survolé la frontière
The song "Berceuse" by Jean Ferrat is a melancholic lullaby that touches on themes of poverty, injustice, and hopelessness. The song begins with a description of a restless night in Bahia de todos los Santos, where the rustling of tin paper mixes with the sight of familiar hard shadows. The singer then addresses a "little man" or "little brother," urging them to sleep amidst the abandoned barrels, their fists clenched in the dust. The chorus repeats this simple refrain in a soothing tone, highlighting the tenderness of their words and the desperation of the situation.
The second verse shifts the focus to hunger, depicting a scene where rats return to large ships while financiers escort prostitutes to their beds. The language conjures a stark image, emphasizing the contrast between different social classes and the ways in which people survive in desperate situations. The third verse notes the presence of indigenous people and their philosophical discussions of good and evil, portrayed as a source of comfort for the singer. The final verse describes a bird that flew over the border on a yellow-orange roof, hinting at themes of escape and freedom even in the bleakest circumstances.
