In 1961 he married Christine Sèvres. During his carrer, Ferrat has had some difficulty with the authorities owing to his humanist perpective and links with communism.
His most famous songs are: Que serais-je sans toi, Heureux celui qui meurt d'aimer, Potemkine, La montagne, Les feux de Paris, L'amour est cerise and many others.
His lyrics are very much influenced by french poet Aragon.

Comme un espoir mis en chantier
Ils se levèrent pour la Commune
En écoutant chanter Potier
Il y a cent ans commun commune
Comme une étoile au firmament
Ils faisaient vivre la Commune
En écoutant chanter Clément
C'étaient des ferronniers
Aux enseignes fragiles
C'étaient des menuisiers
Aux cent coups de rabots
Pour défendre Paris
Ils se firent mobiles
C'étaient des forgerons
Devenus des moblots
Il y a cent ans commun commune
Comme artisans et ouvriers
Ils se battaient pour la Commune
En écoutant chanter Potier
Il y a cent ans commun commune
Comme ouvriers et artisans
Ils se battaient pour la Commune
En écoutant chanter Clément
Devenus des soldats
Aux consciences civiles
C'étaient des fédérés
Qui plantaient un drapeau
Disputant l'avenir
Aux pavés de la ville
C'étaient des forgerons
Devenus des héros
Il y a cent ans commun commune
Comme un espoir mis au charnier
Ils voyaient mourir la Commune
Ah ! Laissez-moi chanter Potier
Il y a cent ans commun commune
Comme une étoile au firmament
Ils s'éteignaient pour la Commune
Ecoute bien chanter Clément
The lyrics of Jean Ferrat's song La Commune reference the Paris Commune of 1871, a proletarian uprising which lasted for two months and aimed to establish a democratic and socialist government in France. The first verse refers to the hope that the uprising brought, with people rising up to establish the commune and listening to the songs of Potier and Clément as they did so. The second verse portrays the workers who fought in the uprising - ferronniers, menuisiers, and forgerons - who became mobilized soldiers defending Paris with a civic conscience.
The third verse speaks of the fédérés, the armed workers who planted their own flag and fought for the future of the commune. The workers who became heroes and sacrificed themselves for the cause are commemorated in the final verse, which speaks of the hope they gave up their lives for and their continued presence in the struggle.
Ferrat's lyrics evoke and honor the Paris Commune as a moment of hope, struggle, and worker solidarity, and the two named songs are historical examples of the music that inspired and united the fighters of that time.
