In 1961 he married Christine Sèvres. During his carrer, Ferrat has had some difficulty with the authorities owing to his humanist perpective and links with communism.
His most famous songs are: Que serais-je sans toi, Heureux celui qui meurt d'aimer, Potemkine, La montagne, Les feux de Paris, L'amour est cerise and many others.
His lyrics are very much influenced by french poet Aragon.

Alors tu comprendras alors tu aimeras
La jeunesse la jeunesse la jeunesse
Quand ils t'agaceront ces sourires futiles
Ces vacarmes do soir ces indécents chahuts
Quand tu t'affligeras do juke-box imbécile
Alors tu comprendras alors tu aimeras
Alors tu aimeras alors tu salueras
La jeunesse la jeunesse la jeunesse
The lyrics in Jean Ferrat's song "La Jeunesse" describe the beauty and vibrancy of youth. The first verse paints a picture of young boys playing sports with vibrant colors on their tanned, muscular torsos. The imagery then shifts to the theater, where the boys are captivated and inspired by the performances of actors like Vilar and Planchon. The verse ends with the mention of the girls, who are depicted as carefree and attractive, with the sea glistening in the background. The chorus ("La jeunesse, la jeunesse, la jeunesse") follows, expressing the idea that youth is something to be cherished and appreciated.
The second verse begins with the singer acknowledging the annoyances of youthful behavior, such as loud music and dancing. However, the verse emphasizes the importance of revisiting one's own youth and the memories that it brings up. The singer suggests that even the silliest and most trivial aspects of youth can hold important value as memories. The final verse speaks to the fleeting nature of youth, noting that the time to love and appreciate it is limited. The verse concludes with the hopeful idea that the youth being observed will continue to create memories and experiences that are valuable and worth celebrating.

Dommage !
