Waiting for Cousteau
Jean Michel Jarre Lyrics

(Instrumental)

Overall Meaning

As the lyrics are instrumental, there are no specific words to interpret. However, the music itself is a beautiful portrayal of the serene and tranquil waters of the Caribbean Sea. The opening notes of the song seem to mimic the gentle waves of the sea as they ebb and flow. The use of the synthesizer to create a distinctive tropical melody also suggests a sense of optimism and joy.

The song Calypso could also be interpreted as a tribute to the Greek goddess Calypso, who was known for her beauty and her ability to enchant and hold onto men. The use of the name Calypso could be seen as symbolic of the allure and beauty of the Caribbean region. Jarre's use of synthesizer music to create a dreamy and romantic atmosphere also suggests the seductive nature of the Caribbean's beauty.

Overall, Calypso is a beautiful and soothing song that captures the essence of the Caribbean Sea and pays tribute to its enduring beauty and appeal.

I'm 49. I was 18 when I went to Paris to see Jean-Michel Jarre on the 14th July 1990, Bastille Day. He had just released his album Waiting For Cousteau. I'd seen him before in 1988 at the London Docklands. I was a seriously hardcore Jarre fan since I was 14. So for me, this track will always remind me of walking down the road to La Defense, which seemed to go on forever, and seeing these delay towers of speakers, and then Waiting For Cousteau starting playing, and what was a walk became a run. The sheer excitement and anticipation took over. I made the people I was with run with me, we gotto get down to the front!!! OMG, this was in the afternoon, the concert was hours away. We hit a sea of people, we couldnt get any further. Millions of people waiting. A street sign was ripped down because it was spoiling the view. An ambulance slowly tried to get through the crowd and some people were climbing onto it to try and get closer to the concert. It was an insanely hot day. We spent hours just standing and waiting, and finally the concert happened, and OMG it was the most insane and intense thing I've ever seen... and when the confetti cannons went off on Calypso Part 1 it just went mental. The scale of that concert was just huge. I remember after it finished walking for ages just to get to the Arc de Triomphe and looking back and the La Defense skyline, which was still lit up, and it just looked amazing from there.

2.5 million people in Paris, on a beautiful hot Bastille Day. To be part of that is one of the best highlights of my life.

Sorry for the ramble. Thought I'd share ha ha!

Most welcome ramble. I saw the recording on the Catalan broadcast on 1992. Then I was 17 and 15 at the time of the concert.
I wish I had the chance to be there.

Yes, exactly what my friend and I did as well-went to the Docklands gig and then we flew to Paris for this one, literally a last minute decision. It was so hot the asphalt was melting on the road the only thing to drink was hot cans of Coca-Cola sold by ambulating vendors! And of course this piece of music which was looping until it got dark and the concert started at 10 pm. After the concert, Paris was partying and totally crazy. (driver) is throwing fireworks at each other…😃we didn’t sleep the whole weekend but boy was it worth it✊😊
