There's a place for us
A time and place for us

Hold my hand and we're halfway there
Hold my hand and I'll take you there

Somehow
Some day
Somewhere!

Overall Meaning

The song "Finale" is a beautiful and emotional piece that brings together the main characters of "Les Misérables" in a powerful and uplifting final moment. The opening lines express a longing for a better world, a place where the characters can find peace and happiness. The repeated phrase "There's a place for us, a time and place for us" conveys a sense of hope and possibility, suggesting that even in the darkest of times, there is still a glimmer of light to hold onto.

The next two lines speak directly to the characters' relationships, as they reach out to one another for support and comfort. The lines "Hold my hand and we're halfway there / Hold my hand and I'll take you there" suggest that the characters can rely on each other to find their way to the better future they desire. The final lines of the song capture the universal human desire to find meaning and purpose in life, expressed through the words "Somehow, some day, somewhere!", which reinforce the idea that even if the characters do not know exactly when, where, or how their dreams will come true, they still hold onto hope and faith that they will.

Now you are here
Again beside me
Now I can die in peace
For now my life is blessed
You will live
Papa, you're going to live
It's too soon, too soon to say goodbye!
Yes, Cosette, forbid me now to die
I'll obey
I will try
On this page
I write my last confession
Read it well
When I, at last, am sleeping
It's the story
Of one who turned from hating
The man who only learned to love
When you were in his keeping
Come with me
Where chains will never bind you
All your grief
At last, at last behind you
Lord in Heaven
Look down on him in mercy
Forgive me all my trespasses
And take me to your glory
Take my hand
I'll lead you to salvation
Take my love
For love is everlasting
And remember
The truth that once was spoken
To love another person
Is to see the face of God
Do you hear the people sing
Lost in the valley of the night?
It is the music of a people
Who are climbing to the light
For the wretched of the earth
There is a flame that never dies
Even the darkest night will end
And the sun will rise
They will live again in freedom
In the garden of the Lord
We will walk behind the ploughshare
We will put away the sword
The chain will be broken
And all men will have their reward
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes!
Aah!
Aah!
Aah!
Tomorrow comes!

French Version:
Jean Valjean:
I no longer depart alone.
I am happy
To see your smile again,
Now I at last may die.
Cosette:
You will live,
Papa, you're going to live
I want you to live,
Listen to me!
Valjean:
Yes Cosette,
You forbid me to die
I will try to obey.
On this page, I write my soul's confession
And the secrets that you would want to know.
It's the story, of a man who loved you so,
He confided in you his life
Before he disappeared.
Fantine:
Come with me,
Where chains will never bind you.
Let me guide you
Towards supreme happiness.
Lord in Heaven, look down on him in mercy.
Valjean:
Forgive me all my trespasses
And take me to your kingdom.
Fantine & Eponine:
Take my hand,
And come into his glory.
Take the love,
Which shines when life is fading.
Fantine, Eponine, & Valjean:
And remember, the truths within your prayer
To love another person
Is to be near God on Earth.
Company:
For the will of the people,
None can extinguish our voice,
And so the song will ring out forever,
As it had so long before,
We wish that our light will
Penetrate the mask of night,
To illuminate our land
And to change our lives.
The glorious day will come.
When on its way to the ideal,
Mankind will progress from evil to good
And from falsehoods to truth.
A dream may yet die,
But hope lives on forever!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong for humanity?
For every fallen barricade, one hundred more will soon arise,
For the will of the people,
We hear the sound of distant drums,
Announcing the future that they bring when tomorrow comes!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong for humanity?
For every fallen barricade, one hundred more will soon arise,
For the will of the people,
We hear the sound of distant drums,
Announcing the future that they bring when tomorrow comes!
Ah! Tomorrow comes!

Anyone else sobbing? I lost it when I saw the bishop
“To love another person is to see the face of God”

@isaaccardenas1844

Amazing.

@mikeor-

Colm Wilkinson played Valjean in the 10th anniversary. Here, he's the bishop. The old Valjean begets the new Valjean, which is a nice touch.

@wightman1525

@@mikeor- Wilkinson originated the role of Val Jean.

@jennidoesherbest

Especially because the friggin way they framed it, their looks to each other are the thread from that priests kindness all the way to Cossettes life. It breaks my heart every time.

@GeometricMason

Keep in mind that in this scene, the Bishop is the Personification of God just as Fantine is Valjean's personal angel of death.

You arent human if you don't cry when Valjean says, "A man who only learned to love, when you were in his keeping"

@ZachElamOfficial

For me, it’s when he says “On this page, I write my last confession.” That line seals the deal.

@vickynewnham261

I cry all the way through it...

@fRo0tLo0p

Nah. I like the original lyrics better and I am very much a human.
