Her career started soon after her dance studies at Bard College, (BA, 1961). That year, she recorded The Newest Sound Around with fellow Bard student, Ran Blake. [2]
Particularly during the 1960s and 1970s, she recorded her distinctively independent and creative style either as a lead artist or a sidewoman for major performers of the jazz avant garde on independent labels in America and Europe. These labels included Birth, BYG Actuel, JCOA, ECM, Black Saint/Soul Note and Horo. Beginning in 1967, she started touring and recording with Gunter Hampel of Germany, who performed on vibraphone, bass clarinet, flute, soprano saxophone. Lee went on to marry Gunter and raise a daughter with him. [3] Aside from Hampel, she also appeared on recordings and live performances of Marion Brown, Anthony Braxton, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Enrico Rava, Andrew Cyrille and John Cage. She had a major role in Carla Bley's magnus opus, Escalator over the Hill (1971). [4].
She passed away from cancer in 2000 in Tijuana, Mexico.
I Thought About You

And I thought about you
I passed a shadowy lane
And I thought about you
Two or three cars parked under the stars
Winding stream
Moon shining down on some little town
And every stop that we made
Oh, I thought about you
And when I pulled down the shade
Then I really felt blue
I peeped through the crack
Looked at the track
Oh I'm going back to you
And what did I do, I thought about you
There were two or three cars parked under the stars
Winding stream
Moon shining down on some little town
And with each beam, the same old dream
And then I peeped through the crack
And I looked at the track
Oh I'm going back to you
And what did I do, I thought about you
The lyrics of "I Thought About You" by Jeanne Lee describe a train journey taken by the singer who constantly thinks about someone she misses. As she looks out of the window, she sees a shadowy lane and parked cars under the stars and remembers the person she's thinking about. She sees the moon shining on a little town and has the same old dream with every beam. The singer feels blue when she pulls down the shade and peeps through the crack, looking at the tracks that lead her back to the person she's thinking about.
The song speaks to the theme of longing and reminiscence. The train journey symbolizes a physical distance between two people, but the constant thoughts of the person left behind illustrate an emotional bond. The singer experiences moments of nostalgia, imagining the same old dream with every moonbeam, and senses the power of the memory of the person she cherishes. The lyrics suggest that despite the distance, the singer is drawn to her loved one and that the physical distance may not be as important as the emotional connection they share.
