Come, they told me pa-rum pum pum pum
Our newborn King to see, pa-rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring pa-rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King pa-rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum. rum pum pum pum
So to honor Him pa-rum pum pum pum
When we come
Little Baby pa-rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, pa-rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring pa-rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give our King pa- rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Shall I play for you, pa-rum pum pum pum
on my drum?

Mary nodded pa-rum pum pum pum
The Ox and Lamb kept time pa-rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him pa-rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him pa -rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum

Then He smiled at me pa-rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum

Overall Meaning

The lyrics above are from the classic Christmas carol "Little Drummer Boy." The song tells the story of a poor boy, who comes to see the newborn King and has no valuable gifts to offer. Instead, he offers his talent, playing a song on his drum for the baby Jesus. The repetition of "pa-rum pum pum pum" and "rum pum pum pum" throughout the song creates a rhythm that mimics the sound of a drumbeat.

The lyrics are rich in symbolism and meaning. The little drummer boy represents every person who comes to worship Jesus, with his drum symbolizing the gifts we bring to honor him. The idea that a poor boy with no material gifts can still offer something valuable to the King shows that everyone has something to offer in worship, no matter their station or wealth.

The line "The Ox and Lamb kept time" creates a pastoral scene that evokes the manger where Jesus was born. The fact that even the animals are drawn to the music and respond to it demonstrates the universal appeal of worship and the joy that it brings.

This song has become a Christmas classic, with numerous versions and covers by various artists over the years. It was first recorded by the Trapp Family Singers in 1951, and since then has been recorded by everyone from Bing Crosby to Pentatonix.
