Waterline
Jedward (Ireland-Eurovision 2012) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Flood gates, can?t wait
Here she comes, shut?em fast
Better shut?em fast
Too late, swept away
Feel the rush after the fact

Coming up beneath me
Never been in love so
Deeply before

I am close to the waterline
I thought that I?d been over my head
For the last time
I?m so close to the waterline
And the way I?m loving her now
I know this is bound to go down as the big one.

Whistle blast, lights flash
Throw a rope, grab a hold
Feel the undertow
She laughs, waves crash
What?s the use I can?t let her go

Coming up beneath me
Never been in love so
Deeply before

I am close to the waterline
I thought that I?d been over my head
For the last time
I?m so close to the waterline
And the way I?m loving her now
I know this is bound to go down as the big one.

Flood gates, can?t wait
Here she comes, shut?em fast
Better shut?em fast
Too late, swept away
Feel the rush

I am close to the waterline
And the way I?m loving her now
I know this is bound to go down as the one

I am close to the waterline
I thought that I?d been over my head
For the last time
I?m so close to the waterline

And the way I?m loving her now
I know this is bound to go down as the big one.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jedward's "Waterline" talk about the overwhelming feeling of being in love, and how it can feel like being on the edge of a flood, unable to stop the rush of emotions. The flood gates are mentioned as a metaphor for the singer's inability to control the power of their feelings for the person they are in love with. They are swept away by the rush of emotions even after the fact, unable to let go of the person who makes them feel this way.

The chorus is where the water theme of the song comes into full effect, with the singer saying that they are close to the "waterline." They feel like they've gone over their heads before, but this time it's different - this is the "big one," the love that is going to pull them under. The repetition of "I am close to the waterline" emphasizes the feeling of being on the brink, and the uncertainty of what will happen when they finally succumb to their emotions.

The verses describe the physical and emotional sensations that accompany this overwhelming love. The singer's heart is pounding as they feel the rush of being in love, and they've never experienced anything so deeply before. The imagery of waves crashing and a whistle blast adds to the feeling of being on the edge of something powerful and potentially dangerous.

Overall, "Waterline" is a song about the all-consuming power of love, and the fear and excitement that comes with giving in to that love completely.

I just love the fact that we are the country with the most wins in Eurovision and we chose to send them two years in a row

Jack O Donovan

Hyvens We don't know wether or not we would have placed higher if we had sent another singer and song, I'm happy that we have decided to ban them from our national selection. I wouldn't want my country to be placed high for the wrong reasons. Honestly I would rather have our 10th place in 2005 then a win with Jedward. We don't need them, we out the country with the most wins in the Eurovision. Unfortunately the standard is rising for songs each year and we have yet to rise to that standard

Hyvens They went through our NF and won twice. Don't know why
