Crossroads
Jeff Beck & Eric Clapton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went down to the crossroads
Tried to flag a ride
I went down to the crossroads
Tried to flag a ride
Nobody seemed to know me
Everybody passed me by

I went down to the crossroads
Fell down on my knees
I went down to the crossroads
Fell down on my knees
Ask the Lord above for mercy
Save me if you please

I am going down to Rosedale
Taking my rider by my side
I am going down to Rosedale
Take my rider by my side
You can still barrelhouse, baby
They call us on the riverside

You can run, you can run
Go and tell my friend-boy Willie Brown
You can run, you can run
Go and tell my friend-boy Willie Brown

And I'm standing at the crossroads
I believe I'm sinking down

Overall Meaning

"Crossroads" is a classic blues song about a man who is down on his luck and seeking redemption. The lyrics describe the singer's attempts to hitch a ride at the crossroads, which is a place of spiritual significance in many cultures. Despite his efforts, nobody stops to help him, and he ends up falling to his knees and asking for mercy from God.

The second half of the song is more upbeat and describes the singer's plans to go to Rosedale with his lover. He mentions that they can still "barrelhouse," which is a style of boisterous piano playing often associated with the blues. The song ends on a somewhat ominous note, with the singer stating that he believes he is sinking down. This could be a reference to his despair and sense of hopelessness.

Why do people get caught up in an argument about who is the best guitarist .. just enjoy the interplay and virtuosity of both and let the music speak instead of wrangling your brain over who is best .. aren't we so lucky to have both

@michaelreisser6986

You are so damned right, man! So lucky to have still both living! (So many "blues-stringers heaven done call back home"!)

Jeff Beck the best guitar player ever

@archiguitarchi

I'm 64 this year and fortunate to still be performing. My main influence in 1967 was Clapton (fresh Cream), then there was Beck, and soon Page. Hendrix was an influence too, but not much of him has stayed with me. For me it's still Clapton and Beck. I consider myself blessed.

@psfirthoffith

Beck and Clapton are still two of the greatest guitarists to ever play.

@Shelby427Web

RIP Jeff Beck ❤

@markeepg5681

My two guitar influences. I love how Clapton always plays modestly in the first solo, gives Beck the spotlight to flex his elite chops, then the two duke it out at the end.
