People Get Ready
Jeff Beck Sting Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

People get ready
There's a train a-coming
You don't need no baggage
You just get on board
All you need is faith
To hear the diesels humming
Don't need no ticket
You just thank the Lord

People get ready
For the train to Jordan
Picking up passengers
From coast to coast
Faith is the key
Open the doors and board them
There's room for all
Among the loved the most

There ain't no room
For the hopeless sinner
Who would hurt all mankind just
To save his own
Have pity on those
Whose chances are thinner
Cause there's no hiding place
From the Kingdom's Throne

So people get ready
For the train a-comin'
You don't need no baggage
You just get on board
All you need is faith
To hear the diesels humming
Don't need no ticket
You just thank, you just thank the Lord

Yeah
Oh
Yeah
Oh

I'm getting ready
I'm getting ready

This time I'm ready
This time I'm ready

Overall Meaning

The song "People Get Ready" by Jeff Beck and Sting is a gospel-influenced track that speaks about the need for individuals to mentally and spiritually prepare themselves for an upcoming journey, which is symbolized by a train. The song serves as a metaphor for the journey of life, and the need for preparation in order to achieve salvation. The lyrics also indicate that all individuals are welcome to join the journey, regardless of social status or standing, as long as they possess faith in God.

The first verse of the song speaks about the imminent arrival of a train, which symbolizes the journey of life. The lyrics suggest that individuals do not need to carry any physical baggage with them on this journey, as all they need is faith. The mention of the "diesels humming" is a reference to the sound of the train, which represents the inevitability of the journey. The second verse speaks about the upcoming journey to Jordan, which symbolizes the promised land in the Bible. The lyrics suggest that individuals from all walks of life are welcome to join the journey, and that faith is the key to gaining entry. The chorus reiterates the message that faith is all that is needed to join the journey, and that there is room for everyone.

The third verse speaks about the consequences for those who are not mentally or spiritually prepared to undertake the journey. The lyrics suggest that individuals who harm others for their own benefit will not be allowed to join the journey, and that those whose chances are "thinner" should be shown pity. The final chorus reiterates the need for preparation and faith, and the importance of thanking the Lord for the opportunity to embark on this journey.

Since his passing, Jeff Beck has been labeled as one of the rock and roll guitar icons. But in reality, Jeff Beck was way more than that. He was the only guitarist of the rock era to not be defined by a single style or - even worse - a single guitar solo. Beck had the ability to make the guitar sing melodies with heartful feeling and emotion. I've seen Beck perform - he's the only guitarist I have ever seen smile while he plays! Plus, he is constantly aware and visually in awe of the musicians he is performing with. That is also very unique. He was not only an incredible talent, he emulated kindness and passion. It's clear to me that Jeff Beck made the world a better place and with his untimely passing, we lost a bright light. He will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace...
