Corpus Christi Carol
Jeff Buckley Lyrics
He bear her off, he bear her down
He bear her into an orchard ground
Lu li lu lay
Lu li lu lay
The falcon hath bourne my mate away
And in that orchard there was a hold
That was hanged with purple and gold
And in that hold there was a bed
And it was hanged with gold so red
Lu li lu lay, lu li lu lay
The falcon hath bourne my mate away
On this bed there lyeth a knight
His wound is bleeding day and night
By his bedside kneeleth a maid
And she weepeth both night and day
Lu li lu lay, lu li lu lay
The falcon hath bourne my mate away
By his bedside standeth a stone

Corpus Christi Carol is a Middle or Early Modern English hymn (or carol), first found in a manuscript written around 1504 by an apprentice grocer named Richard Hill. The original writer of the carol remains anonymous.
The structure of the carol is seven stanzas, each with rhyming couplets. The use of seven stanzas probably has religious significance. Seven is a number that is considered perfect, which would make sense as Christ is mentioned in the seventh stanza. It is also interesting to note that the tense changes in the fifth stanza from past to present continuous.
Singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley included his interpretation of Britten's work on his debut 1994 album, Grace. About his version Buckley said, "The 'Carol' is a fairytale about a falcon who takes the beloved of the singer to an orchard. The singer goes looking for her and arrives at a chamber where his beloved lies next to a bleeding knight and a tomb with Christ's body in it."
The song shows Jeff Buckley's singing skill, Jeff demonstrating his huge vocal range.

moscowguitarman
@David Kariu that's a non sequitur. You can have a private concert without capitalism.
Bradley Jonczyk
I hope your right. Because I'd be there!
David Kariu
That would mean capitalism also exists in heaven yay!

My condolences for your family's tragic loss. Jeff had the voice of an angel. <3

@Maribel villa rivera Yes that's true. But Jeff's Mother & Step_father haven't been together for many years. This lady is saying her daughter (NOT Jeff's mother) married Ron 5 years ago, Jeff has been dead since 1997

@MissJensk1 I am not sure about that. I just know he was raised by stepfather and mom and his hiological dad died from a drug overdose in 1975.
