Dream Brother
Jeff Buckley Lyrics

There is a child sleeping near his twin
The pictures go wild in a rush of wind
That dark angel he is shuffling in
Watching over them with his black feather wings unfurled

The love you lost with her skin so fair
Is free with the wind in her butterscotch hair
Her green eyes bloom goodbyes
With her head in her hands and your kiss on the lips of another
Dream brother with your tears scattered round the world

Don't be like the one who made me so old
Don't be like the one who left behind his name
'Cause they're waiting for you like I waited for mine
And nobody ever came

Don't be like the one who made me so old
Don't be like the one who left behind his name
'Cause they're waiting for you like I waited for mine
And nobody ever came

Don't be like the one who made me so old
Don't be like the one who left behind his name
'Cause they're waiting for you like I waited for mine
And nobody ever came, nobody ever came

I feel afraid and I call your name
I love your voice and your dance insane
I hear your words and I know your pain
Your head in your hands and a kiss on the lips of another
Your eyes to the ground and the world spinning round forever
Asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over

Dream brother, dream brother, dream, dream
Dream asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over

Jeff once said: "It's a song about a friend of mine, who's led a rather excessive life... He is in trouble. This song is for him. I know what self-destruction can lead to, and I have tried to warn him. But I am one big hypocrite because when I called him up and told him about the song I'd written, that same night I took an overdose of hash and woke up the next day feeling terrible. It is very hard not to give in to one's negative feelings. Life is total chaos."

And I'm wondering.... that's some heavy hash...

@Moose Overlord It was. He got it in Amsterdam. I forgot why, I think he was leaving the border and they were checking his van and he got nervous and just ate the huge amounts of hash he got. A few hours later he started throwing up black globs of goop. It was written in his manager's book about him.

Moose Overlord

Dang, that must’ve been a pretty big gob of hash!

@Harold BeaumontFinns No kidding, first time I tried dab, I exhaled and my friend who set me up was like “wow, that was a big hit man, you’re gonna be good for a while.” I felt like I was high for 2 days straight and couldn’t sleep. I rethought my entire life and entered a much better phase that lasted several years and never smoked weed again. I think it’s time for a second hit.

@Harold BeaumontFinns Yes, very potent hash and marijuana was around back then! Even way back in the stone ages of the 1960s and 70s. Gee, who knew?

This song is haunting, like most of what Buckley did.

Am i the only one who has tried to be so stoned i puked my brains out all night?

Apparently this song was written for one of his friends who was going to do exactly what his pops did to him, leave his child and wife to tour the world/sleep around with random women. "Don't be like the one who made me so old, don't be like the one left behind his name, because they're waiting for you, like I waited for mine, but nobody ever came" As deep as a needle in your stomach.

Awesome song, the mental imagery that it invokes is haunting and surreal but so vivid. It’s like I can see the music video playing inside my head.

I always wondered what this song was About. Got my revelation today. Thank you so much. It's quite an amazing song. The drums and the guitar are all that. I miss him so much. I listen to this song everyday when I wake up. He was such a talented being.

Gregory Smith

Exactly what the song is about.
