Just Like a Woman
Jeff Buckley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
Nobody feels any pain
Tonight as I stand inside the rain
Ev'rybody knows that baby's got new clothes
But lately I see her ribbons and her bows
Have fallen from her curls

She takes just like a woman
Yes, as she makes love just like a woman
Oh, and she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl

Queen Mary, she's my friend
Yes, I believe I'll go see her again
Nobody has to guess that baby can't be blessed
'Til she sees finally that she's like all the rest
With her fog, her amphetamines and her pearls

She takes
Just like a woman, yes, she does
And she makes love just like a woman
Yes she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl

But it was raining from the first
And I was dying there of thirst
So I came in here
And your long-time curse hurts
But what's worse is this pain in here
I can't stay in here, oh baby, ain't it clear that

I just can't fit
I believe it's time for us to quit
When we meet again
Introduced as friends
Please don't you let on that you knew me
When I was hungry and it was your world

Ah, you fake just like a woman, yes, you do
And you make love just like a woman
And then you ache just like a woman

But you break just like a little girl
She breaks just like a little girl

Overall Meaning

The song "Just Like a Woman" by Jeff Buckley was originally written by Bob Dylan in 1966. The song, according to Dylan, is about a woman who "gets her way just like any woman would, but she'll just cry when she gets tired." The song has been interpreted as a tribute to a former lover of Dylan's or as a reaction to the criticism that he received for going electric. However, Jeff Buckley's interpretation of the song has a slightly different meaning.

In Buckley's version, the singer talks about a woman who everyone knows has new clothes, but her ribbons and bows have fallen from her curls. This could mean that the woman is going through a difficult time in her life, despite her new clothes. The singer goes on to say that she takes just like a woman, makes love just like a woman, aches just like a woman, but breaks just like a little girl. This could mean that despite the woman's appearance and behavior, she is still vulnerable and fragile like a little girl.

The singer then goes on to talk about Queen Mary, who is his friend, and how she can't be blessed until she realizes that she's like all the rest with her fog, amphetamines, and pearls. This could mean that even though Queen Mary may seem like she has it all together, she still has her own issues to deal with. The singer then talks about how it was raining from the first and how he was dying of thirst, which could symbolize his longing for this woman, but her long-time curse hurts him even more. In the end, the singer decides it's time to quit and that when they meet again, they should pretend they never knew each other when he was hungry and it was her world.

Overall, Jeff Buckley's version of "Just Like a Woman" plays on the idea of vulnerability and the façade that many people put up in order to appear strong. The lyrics are open to interpretation and can have different meanings depending on the listener.

Just Like a Woman (Bob Dylan)

Nobody feels any pain
Tonight as I stand inside the rain
Ev’rybody knows
That Baby’s got new clothes
But lately I see her ribbons and her bows
Have fallen from her curls
She takes just like a woman, yes, she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl

Queen Mary
She’s my friend
Yes, I believe I’ll go see her again
Nobody has to guess
That Baby can’t be blessed
Till she sees finally that she’s like all the rest
With her fog, her amphetamine and her pearls
She takes just like a woman, yes
She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl

It was raining from the first
And I was dying there of thirst
So I came in here
And your long-time curse hurts
But what’s worse
Is this pain in here
I can’t stay in here
Ain’t it clear that
I just can’t fit

Yes, I believe it’s time for us to quit
But when we meet again
Introduced as friends
Please don’t let on that you knew me when
I was hungry and it was your world
Ah, you fake just like a woman, yes, you do
You make love just like a woman, yes, you do
Then you ache just like a woman
But you break just like a little girl

Sometimes time passes and you temporarily forget just how brilliant someone was - came here as I've always been a fan of Jeff Buckley and was fortunate enough to have seen him live in perhaps the best show I've ever seen , but for some reason I wasn't expecting too much here, and certainly wasn't expecting to be blown away by the tenderness of this performance . Absolutely beautiful .
