This Time It Will
Jeff Hanson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Night comes and I need someone to take me home

I'm a year's supply of words for no one else

But I'm tired now of offering

Words that you would never understand
Like a dark day, and a cold hand

How it's turned on me again somehow

And my friends that really were aren't really now

And I'm hearing things so quietly

You hold just what you have right over me

Like your whole life, and how it comes right back to mine, oh

Haven't I done this all before?

Maybe I have, I'm not sure

But never again will I be left under the open air

I waited around for you to be there

I won't believe that it's so far away

And I don't sleep now at night but through the day

And you'll ask me why so honestly

But I don't think it's something that I can see

Like an old friend, turning now then once again, oh

Haven't I done this all before?

Maybe I have I'm not sure

But only today will you still keep inside what I have said

It's something new for you to forget

So I'm not making any plans

And where would I begin?

But I'm doing so much better than

So I think you should know

There's not a window that I can't see out

And your stories left too soon to read about

But it was all done so easily

I'm still not sure where I'm supposed to be

Like your whole life, and how it comes right back to mine

Haven't I done this all before?

I know I have I'm quite sure

But never again will I be left under the open air

I waited around for you to be there

Someone that you should have known

Everything was there to be your own

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jeff Hanson's "This Time It Will" are written in a way that expresses emotions that are both painful and nostalgic. It's a song about trying to make sense of one's own life while battling with uncertainty, loneliness and desolation. The song's opening line sets the stage for the mood of the rest of the song - "Night comes and I need someone to take me home". The singer is expressing his weariness and exhaustion, and searching for someone to take him back to a place of comfort, to feel safe once again.

The next lines of the song give insight into the singer's thoughts and feelings. He says, "I'm a year's supply of words for no one else, but I'm tired now of offering words that you would never understand." Here the singer expresses frustration at the prospect of continuing to offer explanations or trying to make others understand his emotions when they never seem to "get it". He then moves on to talk about how certain parts of his life have come back to haunt him; how friends have disappeared, and how he is being held back by forces that he can't seem to overcome. The singer is dealing with a lot of confusion and questions about where he belongs, and the song is an exploration of his attempt to find his way back home.

In conclusion, "This Time It Will" is a heartfelt reflection on the themes of loneliness, confusion, hopelessness, and the ultimate search for home. The song takes us on a deeply personal journey with the singer, and the raw emotion in his voice and lyrics make it clear just how much he is struggling to make sense of his world.

I remember that he used to take the time out to email you back if you messaged him. All my heroes at the time were already dead, Elliott, Drake etc. and I was so happy to know of such a great artist still around. Made it all the worse when he passed.

Eugenio Faria

What a talented musician he was! I've just found out about his work all the way down here in Brazil. Unbelievably poetic and melodic. One of the best music acts I've bumped into for a long time...

I found him watching Nip/Tuck years ago. Hiding behind the moon and couldn’t wait to find out who the artist was, and he was already gone 😞 rip Jeff Hanson

I only came across him by accident yesterday - what an amazing voice, it's a shame a lot of people posting (myself included) did not hear about him before he died R.I.P. Jeff Hanson

Wow this song brings back so many memories. I didn't realise he had passed away, let alone so long ago. Jeff Hanson had some amazing tunes. Such a talent.

This song is very sweet...its strange to me that there is still music made by people that LOVE music and that aren't looking to get rich quick. R.I.P Jeff. You are a gem that will be missed! For all you people that are to scared to show your feelings to the people you love. Let this be a reminder as to how fragile life is...we only have one shot at it and then its back to being space dust. Go ahead and hug someone that is not expecting it!!!

Thank you for your beautiful music Jeff- Hope you and Elliot Smith are making music together

This is one of my all time favorite songs.
