He began a solo career in 2003 and was signed to Kill Rock Stars Records after sending in an unsolicited demo tape. He has since released three albums for the label, Son in 2003 and Jeff Hanson in 2005. His third album for Kill Rock Stars titled Madam Owl was released on August 19 2008. Hanson's solo albums were recorded at Presto! Recording Studios.
Since 1996 Hanson resided in Minneapolis-St. Paul.
Hanson was found dead on June 7, 2009, in his St. Paul apartment, which he had moved into a few days earlier. The cause was mixed drug toxicity.
You Are the Reason

You are the cause for all this fear
I'll let you know when I'm tired of this time
I'll let you know when I'm tired
You are the reason why you're dead
You are the cause for all this yes
I'll let you know when I've had too much of this time
I'm trapped in a tube
I'm tied next to you
Air's running out
We're going too soon
I'm trapped in a tube
Tied next to you
Can anyone see
Oh yes we're going down
Oh yes we're going down
Oh yes we're going down
Down, going down
I am the reason why're you're here
I am the cause for this fear
I'll let you know when I'm tired this time
I'll let you know when I'm tired
The lyrics of Jeff Hanson's song "You Are the Reason" are open to interpretation, but one possible explanation is that the song is about the idea that we are responsible for our own lives and how they turn out. The repeated line "You are the reason why you're here" suggests that we have control over our own destiny and are responsible for the choices that lead us to our current situation. The line "You are the cause for all this fear" could be interpreted as meaning that we are often motivated by fear, both in terms of the actions we take and the thoughts we have. The singer of the song is willing to take responsibility for their own life and decisions, and is willing to let others know when they are tired or have had enough.
The second verse of the song seems to suggest a contrast between life and death. The repeated line "You are the reason why you're dead" could be interpreted as meaning that we are responsible for our own mortality, or that our actions can lead to our own demise. The line "You are the cause for all this yes" is more obscure, but perhaps could be interpreted as meaning that our agreement to things (saying "yes" to things) can have consequences that we are responsible for. The singer once again asserts their willingness to take responsibility for their own life and decisions, and their willingness to let others know when they are at their limit.
The final section of the song describes being trapped in a tube with someone else, with air running out, suggesting a situation of intense pressure and possible danger. The repeated lines "I'm trapped in a tube, tied next to you" emphasize the feeling of being trapped and constrained. The repeated lines "Oh yes we're going down, down, going down" could be interpreted as an expression of fatalism, suggesting that the situation is beyond anyone's control.
Overall, the song seems to be about the idea that we are responsible for our own lives and that our actions have consequences. The repeated refrain of "I'll let you know when I'm tired" suggests that we should be aware of our own limits and communicate them to others.
