Shortly after completing high school, Jeff began to gain attention around the Toronto pub and club scene with a three piece band that showcased his incredible talents. The Jeff Healey Band had a monthly weekend gig at Baker Street, on Queen Street East. Jeff soon garnered local attention and people traveled to come and see him play with his band. Record executives came to check out his performances before he eventually signed with BMG Canada and Artista in the USA. His guitar workmanship became legendary with his unique playing style, and he was recruited for a spot in the 1989 motion picture Road House, which starred Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliott as bouncers at a roadside bar. Jeff and his band were regular 'performers' at the seedy club and are featured on its official soundtrack.
Jeff was more than just a gifted guitarist, he was a devoted passionate musician who played trumpet in his own Jazz band, Jeff Healey and the Jazz Wizards, hosted a regular radio music show on CBC, and collected vinyl recordings including vintage 78's, and was reported to have one of Canada's largest private music libraries.
Jeff Healey tragically died in Toronto, Sunday March 2, 2008, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was only 41. For greater details on Jeff's life and musical career contributions, visit his Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Healey
A live DVD/CD box set entitled "Legacy - Volume 1" was released posthumously in 2009 on Arbor Records without Jeff Healey's wife Cristie and his estate's participation. On his website, Cristie Healey discourages support of this product. www.jeffhealey.com
You're Driving Me Crazy
Jeff Healey Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Why did you leave me lonely?
For here's a heart that's only
For nobody but you!
I'm burning like a flame, dear,
Oh, I'll never be the same, dear,
I'll always place the blame, dear,
Yes, you,
You're driving me crazy!
What did I do? What did I do?
My tears for you
Make everything hazy,
Clouding the skies of blue.
How true,
Were the friends who were near me to cheer me,
Believe me, they knew!
But you,
Were the kind who would hurt me, desert me,
When I needed you!
Yes, you!
You're driving me crazy!
What did I do to you?
The lyrics of Jeff Healey’s “You’re Driving Me Crazy” convey the feeling of a broken heart and loneliness caused by someone who has left the singer. The opening lines of the song establish the situation by describing that the person who left has caused heartache, and the singer is left missing them. The lyrics then continue to show the singer’s pain and desperation, as he cannot stop thinking about the person who has left him. This feeling is conveyed in the second verse: "I'm burning like a flame, dear, / Oh, I'll never be the same, dear, / I'll always place the blame, dear, / On nobody but you." The third verse talks about how the person who left has created a darkness ("Make everything hazy,/ Clouding the skies of blue") in the singer's life, and how the people who care about him cannot help him out of it. The chorus repeats throughout the song, with the singer desperate to know why his love left him in the first place, "You're driving me crazy! What did I do?"
The song is a classic example of a heart-wrenching blues ballad, in which the lyrics play a crucial role in conveying the deep emotions the singer is experiencing. It is a song that is relatable to many people who have experienced heartache and loss. It is a timeless classic that has been covered many times throughout the years by various artists, including Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, and Chet Baker. The song is a testament to the enduring power of music to connect with people on an emotional level.
