Shortly after completing high school, Jeff began to gain attention around the Toronto pub and club scene with a three piece band that showcased his incredible talents. The Jeff Healey Band had a monthly weekend gig at Baker Street, on Queen Street East. Jeff soon garnered local attention and people traveled to come and see him play with his band. Record executives came to check out his performances before he eventually signed with BMG Canada and Artista in the USA. His guitar workmanship became legendary with his unique playing style, and he was recruited for a spot in the 1989 motion picture Road House, which starred Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliott as bouncers at a roadside bar. Jeff and his band were regular 'performers' at the seedy club and are featured on its official soundtrack.
Jeff was more than just a gifted guitarist, he was a devoted passionate musician who played trumpet in his own Jazz band, Jeff Healey and the Jazz Wizards, hosted a regular radio music show on CBC, and collected vinyl recordings including vintage 78's, and was reported to have one of Canada's largest private music libraries.
Jeff Healey tragically died in Toronto, Sunday March 2, 2008, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was only 41. For greater details on Jeff's life and musical career contributions, visit his Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Healey
A live DVD/CD box set entitled "Legacy - Volume 1" was released posthumously in 2009 on Arbor Records without Jeff Healey's wife Cristie and his estate's participation. On his website, Cristie Healey discourages support of this product. www.jeffhealey.com
You Brought a New Kind of Love to Me
Jeff Healey Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Never will I meet one sweeter than you.
Would you turn away or could you
Really every care, If I'd ever dare
To say, "I Love you."?
If the nightingales could sing like you,
They'd sing much sweeter than they do,
If the Sandman brought me dreams of you,
I'd want to sleep my whole life through,
For you brought a new kind of love to me.
I know that you're the queen, and I'm the slave,
And yet you will understand
That underneath it all
You're a maid, and I am only a man.
I would work and slave the whole day through
If I could hurry home to you;
For you brought a new kind of love to me.
The lyrics in Jeff Healey’s song "You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me" express a deep admiration for someone who is very special. The opening lines, “Sweet one, fairer than the flowers, Never will I meet one sweeter than you,” describe the person’s beauty and sweetness in a poetic way. The singer is so impressed by this person that he wonders if they would even care if he said “I love you,” or if they would turn away.
The song compares this person’s singing voice to that of a nightingale, saying that if they sang, they would be even sweeter than the bird. The singer is so enamored with this person that he wishes he could dream about them all the time. He acknowledges that there is a social hierarchy between them, with the person being the queen and him being the slave, but he still sees them as equals at the core.
Overall, the lyrics convey a feeling of deep affection and admiration for a very special person in the singer's life. The song is a tribute to the way this person has changed the singer's view of love and brought them to a new level of understanding.
