Sirens
Jeff Lynne and friends Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It seems like this summer it's never ending,
Can you hear the hot wind blow,
It comes at the same time,
Every year.

And we stay out half the night to hide,
From sleeping in our homes,
Its the north wind.

Here come the sirens, hear them roar.
Here come the sirens, hear them roar.
Here come the sirens, hear them roar,
Once more.

I lay back in the room with dark red curtains,
Wake up to the trucks outside my door,
Short of sleep.
And the sky tonight it's a deadly one,
It hardly lets us breath,
Like Ash Wednesday.

Here come the sirens, hear them roar.
Here come the sirens, hear them roar.
Here come the sirens, hear them roar,
Once more.

And when it's hot I like the fast songs,
When I'm tired and I can't sleep,
Play them slow, way down.

Here come the sirens, hear them roar.
Here come the sirens, hear them roar.
Here come the sirens, hear them roar,
Once more.

Here come the sirens, hear them roar.
Here come the sirens, hear them roar.

Here come the sirens, hear them roar,
Once more.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Sirens" by Jeff Lynne and friends depict the experience of living in a hot and humid summer that lasts too long. The opening lines suggest that the season is never-ending and is marked by the 'hot wind' blowing at the same time every year. The heat is so intense that the singer and his friends prefer to stay out half the night instead of sleeping in their homes, and they are disturbed by the sound of the 'north wind.'

The second verse describes the singer's experience of waking up to the sound of trucks outside his door because he couldn't sleep due to the heat. The sky is described as deadly because it doesn't allow them to breathe, like the observation of Ash Wednesday. The chorus of the song, 'Here come the sirens, hear them roar, Once more,' could be a reference to the emergency services responding to heat-related illness or the general chaos that the heat has brought.

In the last verse, the singer muses on the kind of music he likes to listen to when it's hot. The upbeat and fast-paced songs are fitting when the weather is hot, and he is energetic, but when he is tired and can't sleep, he prefers slower music.

Fascinating -- never heard it before, and I love ARMCHAIR THEATRE. Great to hear Lynne was still doing his dreamy experiments at this time. I want an album of his dreamy experiments! Please, Mr. Lynne . . .

I don´t understand some nasty comments here about this track. This is really fascinating. Too bad, it wasn´t in the Armchair Theatre album. I think it would have been a perfect closing track in that.

I've always thought this B-side track was very similar in tone and feeling to the ELO instrumental entitled The Whale. Sad in places, beautiful, and very interesting throughout both pieces. Much of the same chord progressions were used in both.

This track would have been in a good place as a closing track in Armchair Theatre album.

This has the same chord structure as "Night Calls" by Joe Cocker which he produced around the same time.
