Formed in 1965, the group defined the San Francisco Sound and was the first from the Bay Area to achieve international commercial success. They were headliners at the three most famous American rock festivals of the 1960s—Monterey (1967), Woodstock (1969) and Altamont (1969)—and the first Isle of Wight Festival (1968) in England. Their 1967 break-out album Surrealistic Pillow ranks on the short list of the most significant recordings of the "Summer of Love". Two songs from that album, "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit", are among Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

The "classic" lineup of Jefferson Airplane, from October 1966 to February 1970, was Marty Balin (vocals), Paul Kantner (guitar, vocals), Grace Slick (vocals), Jorma Kaukonen (lead guitar, vocals), Jack Casady (bass), and Spencer Dryden (drums). Marty Balin left the band in 1971. After 1972, Jefferson Airplane effectively split into two groups. Kaukonen and Casady moved on full time to their own band, Hot Tuna. Slick, Kantner, and the remaining members of Jefferson Airplane recruited new members and regrouped as Jefferson Starship in 1974, with Marty Balin eventually joining them. Jefferson Airplane was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and was presented with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

Spencer Dryden died on January 11, 2005.

Both Signe Anderson and Paul Kantner died on January 28, 2016.

Marty Balin died on September 27, 2018

R.I.P. Spencer Dryden...I was just starting my album junkie days ..oh, say about a half century ago..This album was one of my first.ones. I spun it a lot on my plastic drop down record player. The sound was pretty good for what it was...Capturing magic on a live LP is rare and this one is it....Enjoy! ~JBK

I stood 6 feet dead in front of Cassidy at Honolulu's version of the Fillmore in 1969, and the dude scared me to death, probably because I didnt think bass guitars had red lites in the neck (Alebec) and we all were comfortably numb. You should have seen Gracie in her Pocahontas outfit! Every band I saw there had extra sparkle!!!!

One thing I could never classify my parents as in the 60's and 70's (or at any point thereafter) was "square". While my father was (mostly) a jazz bassist/bebop purist, my mother was (and still is) extremely diverse in terms of music she loved and flooded me with from age 10 onward........ my late but ever-cool father was the most coveted/one of a very few jazz bassists in the Washington D.C./Baltimore/Annapolis region, ALWAYS gigging, so Friday nights my mother would take my sister and me out to buy whatever 45 rpm record we wanted. On Saturday, she'd bring home from the library 3 albums. My sister, although born with excellent taste in music, was always with her friends of the realm of David Cassidy/Davey Jones/Beatles/etc. fandom. I'm at home immersed in albums my mother had picked....... Janis Joplin, James Taylor, Blood Sweat & Tears, Ravi Shankar/Alla Rakha, Van Cliburn, Dick Hyman, and then THIS LP. The moment "Clergy" began I was mesmerized..... I was a little amazed to find it.
The immediate effect when the actual music starts? Hanging out in the San Francisco music and arts realm..... this (to me) just SINGS the vibe and style of such a wonderful era. When in 1976 my best friend and I found our way to Haight-Ashbury, not a whisper of the era remained.... absolutely sterile and desolate of people, but at least many of the bands of the good ol' days were still doin' it.

SURREALISTIC PILLOW WAS A SUGGESTION. BLESS ITS POINTED HEAD WAS A STATEMENT. the magic was almost gone by then. The musicians were pros.

For all you folk who were there for this recording - I'm curious as to the date. I was in Hawaii around the time and the sound of this recording is astonishingly close to my memory. One of about three or four Airplane concerts we got in a few short years. As I listen I can see Spencer Dryden right in front of me playing that intro then with Cassidy weighing in. Followed by The Rest.

So, when was this recorded?

I only saw them live in GG park with the Grateful Dead. All I remember was that it was cold and cloudy and Jack Cassidy broke a string.

3/5 of a mile in 10 seconds had to be coke influenced. Just listen to the tempo and the shrill voices. Don't get me wrong I love JA but they had some issues by this point.
