The "classic" lineup of Jefferson Airplane, from October 1966 to February 1970, was Marty Balin (vocals), Paul Kantner (guitar, vocals), Grace Slick (vocals), Jorma Kaukonen (lead guitar, vocals), Jack Casady (bass), and Spencer Dryden (drums). Marty Balin left the band in 1971. After 1972, Jefferson Airplane effectively split into two groups. Kaukonen and Casady moved on full time to their own band, Hot Tuna. Slick, Kantner, and the remaining members of Jefferson Airplane recruited new members and regrouped as Jefferson Starship in 1974, with Marty Balin eventually joining them. Jefferson Airplane was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and was presented with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
Spencer Dryden died on January 11, 2005.
Both Signe Anderson and Paul Kantner died on January 28, 2016.
Marty Balin died on September 27, 2018

Jefferson Airplane Lyrics

For you and me girl
There's a time for love
And a time for lettin' it be baby
Jane, you're playin' a game called
Called "hard to get" by its real name
Makin' believe that you just don't feel the same
Jane, you're playin' a game
You never can win girl
You're stayin' away so I ask you
"Where you been, baby?"
Like a cat and a mouse (cat and a mouse)
From door to door and-a house to house
Don't you pretend you don't know
What I'm talking about
Were all those nights we spent together, hey hey
Only because you didn't know better
I got to know
Jane, you're playin' a game
You're playin' a game, playin' a game
(Jane, Jane, Jane)
Woah Jane you're playin' a game
But why I don't see
Jane you're playin' for fun
But I play for keeps, yes I do
(Jane, Jane, Jane)
That's a game on me, yeah
(Jane, Jane, Jane)
So plain to see
(Jane, Jane, Jane)
Janie, Janie, Janie, Janie, Janie
(Jane, Jane, Jane)
Why you foolin' with me, me, me
(Jane, Jane, Jane)
(Jane, Jane, Jane)
(Jane, Jane, Jane)
(Jane, Jane, Jane)
The lyrics to Jefferson Starship's "Jane" tell the story of a relationship that has soured and ended, but one person - Jane - is playing games rather than being honest about her feelings. The singer is frustrated with Jane's behavior and calls her out for pretending not to feel the same, even though they have spent so much time together in the past. The song is a plea for Jane to be honest and open about her feelings, rather than playing games.
The lyrics also suggest a power struggle between the singer and Jane, with the repeated refrain of "Jane, Jane, Jane" emphasizing his frustration with her. The cat and mouse metaphor implies that they are both chasing each other, but neither can ever truly catch the other. Ultimately, the song is a call for honesty and clear communication in relationships, rather than playing games and causing unnecessary pain and confusion.
