Body & Soul
Jefferson Eddie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My heart is sad and lonely
For you I sigh, for you dear only
Why haven't you seen it
I'm all for you body and soul

I spend my days in longing
And wondering why it's me you're wronging
I tell you I mean it
I'm all for you body and soul

I can't believe it
It's hard to conceive it
That you'd turn away romance
Are you pretending
It looks like the ending
Unless I could have just one more chance to prove, dear

My life a wreck you're making
You know I'm yours for just the taking
I'd gladly surrender myself to you body and soul

My life a wreck you're making

You know I'm yours for the very taking
I'd gladly surrender myself to you body and soul

Overall Meaning

In Jefferson Eddie's song "Body and Soul," the singer expresses his feelings of extreme love and longing for a particular person. He laments his heart's state of being "sad and lonely," which is apparently caused by his heartbreaking love for someone he speaks directly to in the first person. The song asserts that this person is the only one he desires and his love has consumed him all over, spiritually, physically, and mentally.

The singer addresses the person he loves with pleading questions, asking why they cannot understand the depth of his feelings, and why the singer would be treated in such a contrasting manner. He grants that the condition of his love is dire and is almost on the verge of ending. The chorus "I'm all for you body and soul" shows the singer's immense commitment to the person he loves. That they would readily give themselves up completely to be with that person. The bridge affirms the singer's commitment to the person and doesn't comprehend why their love is seemingly unrequited.

The song "Body and Soul" has been the subject of dozens of covers and has been a well-known jazz standard at least since the 1950s. The melody is credited to Johnny Green, while Edward Heyman wrote the text. It was a tremendous success, with at least four versions making the charts in 1930 alone and several more in the early years of the decade. Among the notable performers to have recorded the song are Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Coleman Hawkins, Sarah Vaughan, and Ella Fitzgerald. Below are some exciting facts about the song:

Wow! Thanks for sharing! Love this tune! #JazzVocals #Vocalese
