Jeffrey Lewis is an American singer/songwriter and comic-book artist, part of the Anti-folk movement. Several of his musical influences have been acknowledged in his songs such as The Chelsea Hotel Oral Sex Song, concerning the song by Leonard Cohen, and The History of The Fall. Like Cohen, Lewis' lyrics are complex and literate, often combining a depressing world-view with a hopeful message and sharp wit. Born in New York City and growing up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan Island his songs are also highly informed by his home surroundings, with songs namechecking places such as Williamsburg, the FDR Drive and the East River.
Jeffrey Lewis was born in New York in November 1975. He attended State University of New York at Purchase College and graduated in 1997; his final thesis was on the Alan Moore graphic novel "Watchmen".
After being signed by the British record label Rough Trade in 2001, Lewis released his first official album The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane, and in 2003 he released the album It's the Ones Who've Cracked That the Light Shines Through. Lewis later released the album City & Eastern Songs, in the U.K. in November 2005. All three albums also include his brother, Jack Lewis, who wrote and sang a number of the songs. He has also performed and collaborated with fellow New York Anti-folk singers Kimya Dawson and Diane Cluck.
His latest album, 12 Crass Songs was released on Rough Trade in Europe in September of 2007. As the title suggests, it is 12 covers of the British anarchist punk band Crass. It features vocals, keyboard and recorder from Helen Shriner, bass by both John Kessel and brother Jack Lewis, drums by David Beachamp (live drummer/The Bloodugars) and Raphi Gottesman (who often plays with Jack Lewis). Shwervon's Nan Turner also contributes vocals to various tracks.
Jeffrey Lewis is a Welsh composer. After graduating from University College, Cardiff, he studied composition with Stockhausen, Ligeti, and Boguslaw Schaffer, and electronic composition with Don Banks. His early career was spent as a pianist with the Paris Chamber Ensemble; after his return to the U.K, in 1973 he joined the Department of Music at the University College of North Wales, Bangor.

I know exactly what she would do
She would wander at dawn look around At folks
Find someone better looking who tells Better jokes
And then she'd leave me and I'd walk Back east alone
9 8 7th avenue
Now I'm crossing Madison
Feeling bad on Lexington
3 2 1st avenue
Going east with the wind
Cross the FDR to the east river
Fall right in
And if I had a girl on 10th avenue
I know exactly what she would do
She would wander at day look at all the Guys
Find someone who'se read more books And has bluer eyes
And then she'd leave me and I'd walk Back east alone
9 8 7th avenue
Now I'm crossing Madison
Sobbing on Park Avenue
Feeling bad on Lexington
3 2 1st avenue
Going east with the wind
Cross the FDR to the east river
Fall right in
And if I had a girl on 11th avenue
I know exactly what she would do
She would wander at night hang around At bars
Find someone who draws better and Plays prettier guitar
And then she'd leave me and I'd walk Back east alone
9 8 7th avenue
Now I'm crossing Madison
Sobbing on Park Avenue
Feeling bad on Lexington
3 2 1st avenue
Going east with the wind
Cross the FDR to the east river
Throw myself in
Until the scum in the east river would Drown me
The phlegm and rotten rats would Surround me
The shattered cars at the bottom all Around me
Until I was just another scum in the East river
And when I become the scum it's my Job to drown
The pathetic hopes and failures of the Next unloved clown
Though maybe it would be a girl and We could become scum together
Decompose as the river flows
Become one scum together
Become one forever
One bloated rotten putrid scum forever
9 8 7th avenue
Now I'm crossing Madison
Sobbing on Park Avenue
Feeling bad on Lexington
3 2 1st avenue
Going east with the wind
Cross the FDR to the east river
Fall right in
Jeffrey Lewis's song The East River is a melancholic narrative about lost love and heartbreak. The lyrics express a deeply personal and emotional journey of a person who has lost his lover to better-looking or more talented people. The singer imagines what his girlfriend would do if she were on different streets of New York City, and the thought of her leaving him for someone else breaks his heart. The lyrics also paint a picture of the singer's descent into depression and suicidal thoughts as he walks back east alone, crossing various New York streets until he reaches the East River. The river becomes a metaphor for the singer's feelings of helplessness and despair, as he contemplates throwing himself into its murky waters.
The lyrics in The East River are filled with vivid imagery that captures the essence of New York City streets and the emotions felt by someone experiencing heartbreak. The song's somber tone is amplified by the acoustic guitar and singer's introspective vocal delivery. The lyrics are relatable to anyone who has gone through a break-up or experienced unrequited love. The song also touches on the universal themes of rejection and despair, making it a poignant and enduring piece of music.
