Once Upon A Dream
Jekyll & Hyde Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Turned down the smiling fake friendly esteemed
Just to sleep in a gutter and live like a fiend
Held up a torch to the city's dark belly
Hoping it's flicker might get licked before it's ready
Turns out I found what I'd never thought to own
A palace in the crags with no sceptre or thrown
These brothers they took me and gave me a name
They laid me before them and gave me a claim

We tried to live inside
We tried, we tried, we tried

Keep your eyes close in a crows nest for shine
And don't get tripped up by their fraudulent shrine
Turned out their pockets to give me some greed
A gift for the beggar who will never be seen
Sick of these tyrants advancing our shore
Toasting and laughing on forgotten lore
Not even trying to never be owned
Giving their time to the already de-throwned
I know that my riddles stoke your flickering fear
A speck in the embers that won't disappear

But these mechanical monsters that croak in their sleep
Won't even squeeze out a tear for the sheep

Overall Meaning

In the opening verse of "Once Upon A Dream," the singer expresses his disillusionment with the smiling, fake, and esteemed members of society. He chooses to reject their superficiality and instead, adopts a life of addiction and homelessness ('sleep in a gutter and live like a fiend'). However, he is not content with this empty existence and seeks something more fulfilling.

The second verse then reveals that he has discovered a sense of belonging in a community of outcasts ('brothers') who have given him a new name and a sense of purpose ('gave me a claim'). They live in a hidden palace in the crags, far removed from the corrupt and tyrannical rulers who dominate the city. In contrast to these rulers who possess power, wealth, and status, the singer and his brothers have found a more authentic form of fulfillment and a deeper sense of significance.

The chorus expresses their struggle to maintain their alternative lifestyle in the face of opposition and manipulation from those in power. The verses suggest that they have found a way to live outside of the realm of the oppressor, but the chorus acknowledges that it is not an easy path to follow.

When it's all began,
We knew there'd be a price...

Once upon a dream,
We were lost in love's embrace.
There We found a perfect place,
Once upon a dream.

Once there was a time,
Like no other time before,
Hope was still an open door,
Once upon a dream.

And I was unafraid,
The dream was so exciting!
But now I see it fade...
And I am here alone!

Once upon a dream,
You were heaven-sent to me,
Was it never meant to be?
Was it just a dream?

Could we begin again!...
Once upon a dream.

@moth606

song ends
Jekyll- "Don't abandon me now Emma. I do love you." he pleaded.

Emma kisses Jekyll softly on his forehead as she starts to leave his sight. She slowly turns towards him before fading away.

Emma- singing "If you need me, when you need me, you'll know where I'll be."

Emma walks out of the lab, leaving Jekyll behind...alone(?)
