Her solo career began in earnest in 2002, when a demo version of the song "Finally Woken" was played on the LA radio station, KCRW. The track became one of the most listener-requested songs at the station, landing her in their top 5 played artists, and all prior to any record label being attached. As a result, she signed to Dave Matthews' ATO Records label.
Along with electronic producer Guy Sigsworth (Björk, Frou Frou), she wrote the song Nothing Fails, which was later reworked by Madonna and appeared on her 2003 album, American Life.
Jem released the moderately successful EP It All Starts Here in autumn 2003, followed by the debut album Finally Woken in March 2004. The first single They became her most successful single to date, peaking at #6 on UK Singles Charts.
Her second album Down to Earth was released on 16 September 2008, preceded by the single It's Amazing.
Jem's music featured on various movies (Closer, Eragon, Sex and the City, Monster-in-Law, The Prince and Me), trailers (Ultraviolet, Closer), ads (Lexus), and TV series (The OC, Six Feet Under, Gossip Girl, Smallville, 90210).
Missing you

A happy song
But my happiness disappeared
The moment you were gone
Don't think I ever believed that
This day would come
Now all I'm feeling
Is lost and numb
And oh I know I promised
Mmm that I would try
But I, yes I, miss you
And it's killing inside
I'll always be thankful
For the time we had
We were blessed
I should celebrate
But I feel too sad
All the wonderful memories
Just make me fall apart
And it feels like somebody's
Stabbed me in my heart
And oh I know I promised
Mmm that I wouldn't cry
But I, yes I, miss you
And it's killing inside
Ooh well I, yes I, miss you
Want you by my side
Walking, holding hands
Talking, making plans
Touching my heart my soul
I wish this could be
A happy song
But my happiness disappeared
The moment you were gone
Tell me it's not happening
Say it's not as it seems
Tell me that I'm gonna wake up
It's just a bad dream
Please tell me that it's fiction
Tell me it's just a lie
Whatever you choose to tell me
Please say he didn't die
And I, yes I, miss you
And it's killing inside
Ooh well I, yes I, miss you
Want you by my side
Ooh well I, miss you
Want you by my side
Back here by my side
Here by my side
The song "Missing You" by Jem expresses the heartache of losing someone you love. The lyrics start by Jem wishing that the song could be happy, but unfortunately, her happiness disappeared the moment her loved one was gone. She never believed that the day would come, and now she feels lost and numb. Jem's promises to try and move on are proving difficult, and she misses her loved one terribly. The memories of their time together are bittersweet, and they make her fall apart, like someone has stabbed her in the heart.
In the later part of the song, Jem pleads for someone to tell her that the loss of her loved one is not real, it's all just a bad dream, and fictional. She cannot come to terms with the fact that her beloved is gone, and it is killing her inside. She misses her loved one terribly and wants them back by her side so they can do all the things they used to do together like walking, holding hands, talking, making plans, and touching her heart and soul.
Overall, the lyrics of "Missing You" by Jem capture the raw emotions of losing someone you love, the pain of remembering the good times that you shared, and the longing to have them back.
