Foster started her own label – now called Fosterchild Records - in 2003. Her debut release, Everybody’s Girl, garnered national radio success at the Triple A format, as well as positive reviews, praising her no-frills, unfiltered lyrics. Songwriting awards followed and she has also secured some impressive Film/TV placements, with songs placed in the popular television soap opera All My Children as well as a recent placement in an American Pie movie sequel.
The title track of Foster’s 2006 sophomore CD, The Underdogs, won “Song of the Year” at the Out Music Awards. Foster grew up in a very conservative, Houston, TX, suburb.
Foster credits another outsider, Ani DiFranco, for inspiration in her business model. “Ani did it her way, and she inspired me to do it my way. I’ve created a fairly unique situation. I’ve built a team of people I trust at my label and also, a community of fans,” Foster proudly notes. “It’s always challenging to take off the artist hat and put on the business hat, but it’s a challenge I embrace. My music means too much to me to blindly put it in someone else’s hands.”
Foster’s new album, "Thirty-Nine," was slated for a 2009 release, and a four-song EP, "Songs From Thirty-Nine," is currently available. The video for the single "Closer To Nowhere" recently reached #1 on the LOGO Channel (MTV Network) charts.

We Were Gods

Music by Jen Foster & Danny Torroll
Light the stars in your eyes
Quiet doubts in your mind
Follow me to the place where our colors bled
The young, invincible ones
Rockets aimed at the sun
They called us all wrong, and they trashed all our songs
They dressed us for church, and they threw us in blind
We gathered our hands, and we turned towards the wind
It was our time
We were gods, we were gods
We were gods, at least, we thought
I will never forget
Days we skipped out of class
The subtle crash of a kiss still forbidden
When time was our time to waste
And love was ours to forsake
And all our biggest mistakes gave us all our best stories
We threw out the map, and we tossed up our caps
We swore that we'd break every brick in that wall
But it took all our breath when we found that they'd set us up
To fall
We were gods, we were gods
We were gods, at least, we thoughtâ?¦..
Before we were lawyers
And homeless self-employers
Before we crash-landed
Into the sky...
We were gods, we were gods
Jen Foster's song "We Were Gods" is a poetic and nostalgic reflection on the fleeting nature of youth and the power of possibility. The song begins with a call to action - the singer urges the listener to let go of their doubts and join her in a place where their "colors bled." This imagery suggests a merging of identities and a willingness to embrace the unknown. The following lines describe the singer and her peers as "young, invincible ones" with "rockets aimed at the sun." These metaphors characterize the youth as fearless, ambitious, and full of potential.
However, the next few lines suggest that the singer's youthful optimism was not always met with support from the outside world. The singer suggests that their music was dismissed ("they trashed all our songs") and their image was curated ("they dressed us for church"). Despite this, the youth persevered and remained committed to their goals, gathering together and turning "towards the wind." This image reinforces the idea that their youth was a time of exploration and possibility, filled with energy and momentum.
The last few lines of the song reflect on the singer's current state and how far she has come from her youth. The allusions to law and self-employment suggest that the singer has transitioned into adulthood and the responsibilities that come with it. However, the final line of the song - "We were gods" - suggests that the singer still holds onto the power and potential she felt in her youth, despite the passage of time.
