Grace
Jeni Carr Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Verse:
Mary was a little girl in the summer of 63,
She had her whole life ahead of her, and she knew what she wanted to be...
Well everything happens for a reason so they say,
Then that year when her daddy died, she almost lost her way...

Chorus:
But Mary had Grace, Mary had pride,
She knew who she was down deep inside...
And she stood tall through it all
And she found her way...
'Cause Mary had Grace.

Verse:
Many years down the road she'd found the love of her life,
A big wedding and a little girl named 'Grace', it seemed so right...
But four years later the walls they built just started to fall apart,
And Mary thought she was all alone to mend her broken heart...

Chorus:
But Mary had Grace, Mary had pride,
She knew who she was down deep inside...
And she stood tall through it all,
And she found her way...
'Cause Mary had Grace.

Bridge:
Being a single mom aint always been so bad,
When things get rough, she looks at all she has...

Chorus:
Mary has Grace, Mary has pride,
She knows who she is down deep inside...
And she'll stand tall through it all
And she'll find a way... Yeah she'll find a way...

Lead...

Chorus:
Mary has Grace, Mary has pride,
She knows who she is down deep inside...
And she'll stand tall through it all

And she'll find a way
'Cause Mary has Grace.

Overall Meaning

The song “Grace” by Jeni Carr is a tribute to the resilience and strength of a woman named Mary who has experienced significant challenges in her life. In the first verse, we are introduced to Mary as a little girl filled with dreams and goals for her future. However, her father’s death in 1963 almost leads her to lose her way. The chorus highlights how Mary’s integrity and self-awareness help her persevere through the difficult times despite these setbacks.

The second verse fast-forwards to many years later when Mary has a family of her own. She experiences a rocky period in her relationship, but even then, Mary’s grace, pride and the deep understanding of herself allows her to weather the troubled storm. In the bridge, Mary admits that being a single mom is not always easy but when things feel tough, she focuses on all the positive things she has in her life to help her cope. In the final chorus, the song drives home the message that Mary's strength of character knows no bounds because of her inherent grace.

Jeni I have watched you perform for the last 4 years that I have been in Louisville, and I can say without any hesitation that this song and video is some of if not the best work you have ever done. I remember you singing this at Legends and telling Jason This is the song that is going to send you over the top. None of that has changed. It has been such an honor to be a friend of yours. Keep pushing for your dreams.
