If I Die Young
Jennifer Ewbank Lyrics

If I die young bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
Uh oh uh oh

Lord make me a rainbow, I'll shine down on my mother
She'll know I'm safe with you when
She stands under my colours, oh and
Life ain't always what you think it oughta be, no
Ain't even grey, but she buries her baby
The sharp knife of a short life,
Well, I've had just enough time

If I die young bury me in satin.
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

The sharp knife of a short life,
Well I've had just enough time

And I'll be wearing white when I come into your kingdom
I'm as green as the ring on my little cold finger
I've never known the lovin' of a man
But it sure felt nice when he was holding my hand
There's a boy here in town says he'll love me forever
Who would have thought forever could be severed by

The sharp knife of a short life,
Well I've had just enough time

So put on your best boys and I'll wear my pearls
What I never did is done

A penny for my thoughts, oh no I'll sell them for a dollar
They're worth so much more after I'm a goner
And maybe then you'll hear the words I been singin'
Funny when you're dead how people start listenin'

If I die young bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
Uh oh (uh oh)

The ballad of a dove
Go with peace and love
Gather up your tears, keep 'em in your pocket
Save 'em for a time when your really gonna need 'em oh

The sharp knife of a short life,

Well I've had just enough time
So put on your best boys, and I'll wear my pearls

Overall Meaning

The song "If I die young" by Jennifer Ewbank starts with the singer's request to be buried in satin if she dies young. She wants to be laid on a bed of roses and then sunk in the river at dawn. She desires to be sent away with the words of a love song. The song's chorus repeats these lines starting with "the sharp knife of a short life, well, I've had just enough time" and reiterating the first verse about being buried in satin.

The second verse is about the singer's wish to make a rainbow when she dies, as she believes that it will reassure her mother of her safety. She goes on to say that life is not always what one expects it to be and that it can be cruel because she was buried by her mother despite the fact that she never got to experience love from a man. Nevertheless, she enjoyed holding a man's hand, and a boy in town pledged to love her forever. But that promise was broken by the sharp knife of a short life.

The bridge tells people to put on their best, and she will wear her pearls because what she never did is now done. The song's final verse presents the singer's thoughts as she contemplates death. She says that her thoughts are worth more than a penny, but she will sell them for a dollar. She anticipates that people will listen to her words and remember her once she dies. The song ends with "so put on your best boys, and I'll wear my pearls."
